Do deer focus on this food source late season? I have a spot that is good early season but i have never hunted it late season. It’s a hayfield the farmer has planted for his horses and has alfalfa mixed in. What are your thoughts?

They hit the alfalfa fields hard down here all winter long, especially after theres snow on the ground. Go by at night and shine the field to see where thier at right after sunset, they move through the fields all night long.

My understanding is that in the winter, they use more calories/energy than they gain by eating alfalfa or hay. So my guess is that would be a last resort.

Gets brown? It stays a deep green under the snow here even when its way below zero. Id say they would eat it, dry hay or brown dried alfalfa is something to eat, Id say they would eat it, maybe not. Here dry baled hay is alfalfa not straw. If the cows will eat it so will the deer.

Last year our neighbors alfalfa feild was green all season long even under snow. This year turned alsmost bright yellow and has now toned down to a brownish yellow. Deer are still out. I wonder if it has to due that it is taller this year from not having another crop cut off of it. The day season ends my cameras will be on it. I’d say if you have snow, hunt it! Good luck PT!

Alf alfa is similar to some clover in the fact that it holds its nutritional content long after its gone dormant. When I had deer on the farms up north they would come from over 1mile to get to the alf alfa feild by dark they be 20 strong out there digging thru feet of some.
