    Got this in an email.

    Quote:

This is the deer accident that was in the Luverne paper last week with Mike & Cindy Kunkel.

This was an accident caused when a car hit a deer on the 2-lane highway near the East Menards in Sioux Falls on the evening of Fri , Nov 11th . The car caused the deer to fly thru the air and into the oncoming pickup truck , driven by Mike Kunkel and his wife Cindy [ Tony’s brother ] . It flew over their hood straight thru their windshield . They never knew what happened ; it knocked them out , and their truck left the road , went into the ditch and hit a tree . they are questioning GM’s air-bag systems as the SRS system never inflated , after hitting the tree !!!!! The rescue squad had to use the Jaws to open the doors to get them out . Good thing they both wear glasses , it kept the flying glass out of their eyes . Notice the hoof imprint in Cindy’s forehead !!!! Very , very lucky couple , this could have ended a lot differently ……. the following is an update from Cindy on Friday the 18th .

    Happy Friday,

I thought we would just send you an email to update you a bit. We are healing. Each day brings new bruises. Very sore and still dizzy. Mike was able to sleep in bed last nite. He took big pain pill. I can’t lay down yet with my head, so I am on recliner couch. We go to SF to face doctor this afternoon to get my nose plugs out and I think remove stitches, etc. I hope to be able to breath thru my nose then so I can have my teeth worked on next Tuesday. I have ordered glasses and hope to get them next Wed. The deer was removed from our pickup yesterday afternoon and we hope to get it towed to Luverne today so we can get our personal things out of it. I attached a couple pics. You have permission to share if you so choose. Thanks for you thoughts and prayers.

    Have a nice weekend.

They are very lucky to not have endured more serious injuries; or a death. We see a couple extreme accidents every year, and its scary. A buddy of mine Jay, had a buck that was hit by an on-coming truck spin around and go through his windshield – broke his neck. Very similar circumstances with a couple that was here in WI from MI, and sadly that resulted in a death.

yikes, during november it might not be a bad idea to drive around with a football helmet on.

It’s amazing they didn’t sustain more injuries. Another reminder it can happen at any time and don’t take your life or seatbelt for granted.

I hope they heal up ok, it looks like they will, ouch!!! I have a cousin that made and had mounted a welded grate to his front end of his truck, from the bumper up to about 6″ over the height of the hood. He said he did it because he got tired of hitting deer and knew someday one would go through the windshield. He never drove slow going down gravel roads, he said better to hit them hard then to have them bounce.
