This archery season brought something totally new to me this year. On this piece, the doe:buck ratio is usually about 10:1. For whatever reason this year I’d have to say it’s literally 1:1, mostly 1.5 yr olds of course. For this reason I chose to forego(sp?) my hunting opener tradition with family and friends in NW MN just to see how the rut would play out here. This deer was the best buck I had on cam on this particular hunting property. I had an encounter with him the Saturday before firearms season while moving from one stand to another during one of my all day sits. Unfortunately I was unable to even draw on him before the gig was up, luckly he didn’t spook off. On Tuesday of our shotgun season I had him come by at 60yrds and opted to pass because I never got a complete look at him (I’ve been there before and walking up on a dead buck not on my hitlist is not a good feeling.) Anyway as luck would have it, he showed up again from the same direction 5 hrs later. He must have really been cruising for does. Well I got a better look at him and knew with all the hunting pressure around me that it was now or never. I already miss being in the woods and can’t wait for the weekend to get out and also arm as many trees with cams to see what did or should I say didn’t make it. Anyway, nothing really special, just a good looking ten (at one time) with an inside of 18″, 215lbs and a very heavy neck swell. Between 10/25 and 11/08 he managed to break off his left G2 and half of his left G4. A special thanks to my friend Jim, the human “pack mule” and to Gobbler for taking some quick photos before hitting the road on his own hunting trip!
Big Congratulations Buddy! That is a really great buck for the area that you hunt in! Kudos to you for holding out and shooting the one on your hit list.
