Short and Sweet rut vacation!!

Well my 14 day vacation for the rut started yesterday. I passed a 140″ 3 1/2 year old last night, and was rewarded with a 5 1/2 year old buck this morning. Woke up a little late and hustled to make it to my stand at daybreak. Had 3 does and 4 fawns pass by shortly after first light. About 10 minutes passed and the buck parade started. Had a 3 1/2 y.o., two 2 1/2 year olds, and a 1 1/2 chasing does all over the oak ridge that I was perched on. That went on for about an hour and then things really died off. I was debating getting out of my stand around 10:30am but had a fawn come in from my west so I figured I’d stick it out till there were’nt any deer around. After watching the fawn feed below me for 10 minutes I noticed an adult doe off to my west coming my way, with a buck keeping pace with her. As soon as I got a good look at him through the binoculars I knew it was a buck that I called “Devilpoint”. The doe worked her way below me to twenty yards and when the buck stepped into my shooting lane at 30 yards I drew back and let him have it. Double lunged him and he only made it about 30 yards before flopping over backwards. I’m one happy camper! I believe that I may have a shed from this buck as a 3 1/2 y.o., and I found one of his sides this past spring. This was one of two bucks that I was targeting this season and I couldn’t be happier with making it happen so early into my vacation….the only bummer is that now I’ll have to pull house duties instead of sit in a tree .
Best of luck to all you fellas! It’s getting good out there

Wow, he’s a beauty! Congrats. Sounds like you should be spending some time videotaping from the tree the next 12 days.

Congrats on a great buck! I feel your pain with the “honey do list”. Try shooting a good buck in the first 5 days of season? I wish MN would change the rules so a hunter could shoot a buck with bow and gun. Oh well, guess I’m off to WI to try and get another one.

Nice job. Sometimes there is a price to pay for success. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t trade a buck like that for house duty. Still lots of does to harvest.

It’s possible, I killed him at what I would guess is 3/4 of a mile from the ridge you hunt on. Good luck Jigger, there’s plenty of good one’s left out there.

Thanks for all the kind words fellas. Best of luck to all still hunting .

Here’s one last picture with his sheds from the past two years. Pretty cool as my dog BB found his single side from when he was 3 1/2. I found one side of him this past spring but traded it to another fella that had found his other side. Met up with him for a few celebratory beers last night and he gave me the set from last year.
