What a awesome night to be in the woods! Seen deer from 430 till dark. I had a close encounter with a monster 9 point. I rattled and grunted him in at the last few min of shooting light from over a hundred yards away. Only to end up having a 5 min stair down at 15 yards. I was never able to draw my bow. He looked for the “deer” then looked up scent checked then turned and trotted away. I tried stopping him a couple times out to 60 yards just wouldn’t stop. What you think are the chances of seeing this guy again? I don’t thind he could wind me he was up wind. Has to be the biggest bodied deer I have ever seen. Going to loose some sleep now!

Congrats John on your encounter…one you won’t soon forget Im sure. During this time of year I wouldn’t doubt you would see him again. Plus if what you said is true and he didn’t wind you, then your chances are that much better. Good luck!
November 3, 2011 at 2:20 am #113739Well I can’t say for sure he didn’t but know he came in from down wind, where he stopped and ran from he was up wind. No idea what he would score but that’s ok it took two seconds to decide he is a shooter!!!

Thats when score doesn’t matter
If by chance he cut your walking path, or the wind swirled on you causing him to take off, I would say you have less of a chance of an encounter out of the same stand. I wouldn’t be shocked, however, if you did. I don’t think you decreased your overall chances of encountering him again, but if he winded you I would probably say you drastically decreased your chances of encountering him in that same stand. If he didn’t wind you, I don’t know if you did all that much harm being its ‘that’ time or year.
November 3, 2011 at 3:07 am #113753I have seen plenty of big deer before. This one I guess its not even the rack that is stuck in my mind, its the size I can’t get over how big he was I know its the rut but….WOW is all I can say!
November 3, 2011 at 3:13 am #113755sence he only trotted away it sounds like he didnt like the fact there was not a buck there. but if he did wind you it seams he probly thought you were in the area not 15 yards away. also if your got a doe in heat in your area that incident will be the last thing on his mind. good luck
November 3, 2011 at 3:15 am #113756I agree that you could easily have another encounter. Its early rut yet, so plenty of time for him to make a mistake. Good luck
November 3, 2011 at 3:25 am #113758Been a long time since I have had a encounter get me this rattle! I thought it was game over!

November 3, 2011 at 11:53 am #113765Good luck! Some of my favorite memories are the close chances. Punching my tag is a bonus! Can’t wait to read about round 2.
November 3, 2011 at 1:33 pm #113775Congrats on your encounter John! Typically what I do in that situation is to converge all my trail cameras within that core area where you had the encounter targeting trails and scrapes. He may turn nocturnal for awhile and hopefully your cameras can pick him up again and you can put together another pattern.
Good luck!

I’m hoping worse case he did go nocturnal for the time being. That way he’s not on the move during the gun seasons. I think if he makes it threw them I stand a good chance during the late season on a food source!
November 3, 2011 at 4:09 pm #113804My biggest one, I grunted and bleated him in but he hung up in the brush 50 yards from me and stayed there until the sun went down. I waited until an hour after dark, climbed down, and freshened a scrape near my tree before sneaking out. Needless to say, I was in the same stand an hour before light the next day. I could hear him working the scrape in the dark and as soon as it was light enough to shoot I tipped the bleat can and he came on a string. Ended up dropping him in his tracks at 20 yards.
I don’t think you spooked him and I would definitely take a chance on the stand again before gun hunters hit the woods.
November 3, 2011 at 4:36 pm #113807scent cone looks good for tonight. Would you try calling again or go in quite, scent free, and try to stay undetected as much as possible?
