Just wondering what all of you guys use in terms of antler growth mineral, or even just mineral in general. I have wanted to put some out there for them to use, now I just am wondering what brand or type….any help??

Age old topic that is beaten to death, and for good reason. Way too many guys get a salt block and just throw it out near their stand. In my opinion, a lot more goes into helping your herd than that.
I also don’t think I am giving up any secrets by saying this, but I have a simple, yet effective formula.
I usually use a 5 gallon bucket for this.
I take one bag of deer cane/ black magic, 1/3 bag of a 20lb bag of antler king mix,1/3 of a bag of hunters specialties 26 vitamin mix, one of the small apple/acorn/sugar/regular flavored blocks (4lbs), and usually some mix that has crude protein. I crush all of this up and use it for 2-3 sites on 2-3 properties. The deer seem to love it and lots of licks have turned into mini ponds. I know its a lot to buy upfront, but it lasts me a while.
Hope this helps, and none of it was meant as an ad for any company, its just what I use for my own purpose.

Not to hijack the thread, but I know that I can improve on the mix or supplements in general, that I feed my deer herd.
I am always looking at improvements, and have been throwing around the idea of making my own mix from scratch. I know this has been done by numerous people, but I am curious if anyone has bought several bags of different minerals in their mostly pure form and mixed them up?
I have a background in biology/chemistry and cannot believe this has not intrigued me more! Off to do research!

    Good Question…..

There are lots of very good mineral supplements available on the market today that deer use. There are manufactures of these products all over the country and most products will show that deer really like to lick them. All mineral lick recipes I am aware of have salt (((Sodium Chloride (NaCl))) as a ingredient and deer just love to lick plain old salt. If you are just wanting to see/photograph deer, a plain old slat block will give you a chance to watch plenty of deer. If you are really trying to benefit your herd through deer mineral usage you need to look at all the guaranteed analysis’s from manufactures and decide which recipe looks good to you. We advertise our guaranteed analysis on our packages and website so customers can see what we have put into our recipe. Its up to the customer to decide whats right for their herd.

Now that you know this tidbit of info lets focus on the ANTLER BUILDER deer mineral from Nutra Deer. I built our recipe after analyzing how deer use salt. We want the deer to come to the mineral site and “lick” as often as possible. We are using salt as the vehicle in our formula to carry all the vitamins and minerals into the deers stomach. After the salt/mineral leaves the stomach it is dispersed into the animals skeleton. The animals skeletal structure is where bucks draw the protein, nutrients, and minerals they need to maximize their antler development and overall body health. I feel the ANTLER BUILDER has a correct balance salt, vitamins, and trace minerals. When using our product you will see a lot of activity and the consumption rates will be very high. Hi consumption rates balanced with the correct ratio of vitamins and minerals ensure deer like and benefit from deer mineral supplements. Its truly a win-win….

I will keep studying the research that comes in on deer mineral and have even set up some research sites with state agencies to try and get even more and better information about the benefits of these mineral products on a deer herd. As the info comes in we will look our ingredients, antler development, body weight, fawn mortality/weights and usage vs deer in the same general locations that don’t have access to the mineral. Why…..I want to know more about herd health and I hope the Nutra Deer brand can help folks like you that just want to know more about “Deer Mineral”.

One to two Trophy Rocks a year. They are placed on stumps near my stands in secluded, heavily wooded areas. I don’t have camera to proove how hard they are hitting it each day, but I notice it looks as though they are eating the ground around the stump and the stums themselves than they are licking the Rock directly.

The first thing i would ask you KB is what are your goals with putting the rock or any other mineral out? If your only goal is to draw deer in and get some pictures then your trophy rock will do just fine, heck a bag of softener salt would last awhile and get the same results. by no means am i bashing trophy rock, it has its purpose, i used them for years but as i did more research i came to find out that even tho i was seeing a ton of deer i was doing nothing to help the health of them i switched to a quality mineral in which the salt content was low and i was actually giving the deer what they needed to not only grow big bone but to help them be healthy. i dont need to mention the mineral i go with but the thing i would say is do your homework, first step, look at the salt content, the stuff i use has 14-17% salt that means that there is more room for the good stuff. just my 2 cents, im not pimping one product over another, just letting you know what i look for in a mineral.

My ultimate goal is to provide the deer I have access to hunt with additional bulk and trace minerals for total herd health improvement. A few years back I read an article in D & DH that outlined essential minerals that all age classes of deer need and how each one improved their health. To my knowledge, it was not written to promote any one company. I then used that and compared the ingredients to TR. It contained every mineral that was called out in the article.

Just last year I noticed the sodium % & thought it was high. But for the $ and the essential trace minerals I decided to stick with it. I also don’t use food plots, so if I will be trying to have deer come to the mineral sight it might as well be within 50 yards of my stand. IF I owned a trail camera, I would aim it at the mineral sight to first see if and how often it is getting used and go from there.

Hey Monster4pt, send me a PM and we can discuss brands and quality outside of this post.
