It’s been a very long season for me. Up until yesterday, I’ve hunted 25 days bow hunting(MN), 5 days in Missouri, and 7 days with rifle(MN) and have gone empty handed. I can’t even count the number of bucks I’ve passed that were not quite mature enough for me without even seeing a shooter all year! This finally all changed yesterday.
I usually don’t like hunting mornings during the late season, but I thought I wouldnt get one by sitting on the couch or sleeping in and it was coming down to the wire. I started driving around to some farms I have access to hunt yesterday morning hoping to see a few out in the fields before the sun came up. As luck would have it, I found a bean field that had about 20 deer in it, including two shooters. I decided to drive around to the back of the farm and sneak into a stand where I thought they would come back to once the sun broke and it was time for them to bed down for the day.
The plan worked perfect. About 5 minutes after being on stand a few small bucks and does started making there way towards me. I caught a glipse of a good buck about a 100 yards threw some thick cover. He never gave me a real good look with the binoculars and decided to look at the area right towards me for about 20 minutes. He didn’t move a musle. I was really getting anxious by this point and started wondering if he was just going to bed down right where he was standing and not give me a shot opportunity. A few minutes later a doe fawn crossed the path he was standing on that got his attention. He started following her and angling quartering away from me. He stepped into my shooting lane and I snuck the 250grain bullet into his back left chest cavity and it lodged into his right front shoulder. The buck went about 30 yards and piled up. I thought I had just shot an absolute monster as i had only really seen his left antler side. It was a little disappointing to see he only had a small right brow tine and 4 points total on his right, but the beam mass made up for it. A quick measurement of his bases were 5 5/8 and 5 3/8.
First buck with my muzzle loader and should look great on my wall.
Guesses on age? I’m thinkin 4 1/2 and some others I’ve showed say 5 1/2. Either way, he is a trophy and I’m proud to have bagged him.

congrats on being persistent and keeping your mind in the game. Great looking buck and he will look good on the wall. I do especially like how heavy he is.
Now about that bean field with one more shooter in it???
    Congrats

I would have to say probably 4.5 but at the same time its tougher aging them without a trail cam pic in my opinion.

Congrats on a great looking Buck. Yet another muzzleloader picture with a scoped gun. I sure hope Minnesota joins the party soon !!! My eye’s just do not shoot open sights well and a 0 powered scope is not much help either.

I forgot to mention he weighed 227lbs field dressed. How much do the guts weigh?
I had a friend gross green score him tonight and measured 147 4/8ths. I didn’t even bother asking him what the net score he was, as there would be a lot of deductions. It’s a personal best for me and my first by muzzy. That’s two BB in back to back years. I’ve still got my MN Muzzy tag and will be heading up to my buddies farm around noon tomorrow for a three day hunt. If it’s anthing like WI, I better be sitting near the food source. I really really wish we could use scopes here in MN. I don’t understand MN rules and regulations. Rifle/Slugs during the rut and no scopes during muzzle loader?

Nets are for fishing , I think a score is what it is and you should NOT take away from a animal because one side is less than the other Just my 2cents… Other than that I think you will see a change in MN before long on the scope deal for Muzz season

I think your buck has great ‘character’. And I agree, the score is what it is….hey B&C or P&Y, deduct this

And these MN regs…what’s the deal? Maybe ‘Hand gunners should have a season too? Scopes optional, with no deductions
