Earlier last week, my dad was telling me he seen a one horned spike that he thought had dropped an antler already. I thought he was full of it! It’s way too early for that! Well, last night I was proven wrong. Just before dark, my dad had a buck cross in front of him in an old cow pasture. It’s filled with tall grass and resembles more of CRP than anything else. As he scoped the deer, he seen antler and knew it was mature. When it turned broad side he dropped the hammer and watched the deer run off. Before tracking he was telling the guys, “it had five on one side.” When they got to the end of the blood trail, there laid a big bodied deer…with no antlers!! I’m sure the look on my dad’s face was priceless. They kicked around in the snow and found one side of the rack. By the looks of it, he had shed the other side within the last two days. It was hardly even scabbed over. I never would have believed it if he wouldn’t have sent me pictures…. Try to explain that at the registration station when you only have a buck tag.
Sorry for the crummy pictures. His phone is one step up from an old bag phone.
