Muzzleloader Buck

With the fresh snow on the ground my 10 year old step son and I could not wait to get in the stand Sat. evening. We were walking into the stand at 2:30 and the deer were already in the field. We managed to scare them off with out doing much harm. We were settled in by 2:45. Around 3:15 does and fawns started to filter in. Most of them were in the Rye field to the north. At about 3:45 I spotted a 2 1/2 year old comeing our way. I got Chase set up with the gun but he never came closer then 110 yards and I did not want him to shoot that far. Deer kept comeing into the field but nothing with head gear. At 4:20 I saw a deer walk into the Buck forage oats and I new it was a buck. I ranged the buck and he was at 126 yards and going the other way into the standing corn field. I glassed him and saw he was a real good buck. So as calmly as I could I told Chase it was a real good buck but it was too far for him to shoot. I grabbed the gun and told him I was going to try and shoot him. He was pretty pumped. By this time the buck was probably 130-150 yards out. He was quartering towards us a little bit. I had a good hold on him and squeezed the trigger. Well when the smoke cleared I started to panic because he was not on the ground and about 10 deer were running and I couldn’t see him. Then I saw him. He was not running hard but the other ones weren’t either. They really didn’t know what was going on. We were pumped. I reloaded and started gathering our gear. Deer started to come back out onto the field so we sat still and watched for another buck. After a few minutes we climbed down and went to the spot. We could not find any blood or hair. I could not believe I missed. I already made up my mind that we were comeing back first thing in the morning. At 7:30pm I could not take it anymore. I got dressed and went out looking. I got on the track that I thought was his and followed it for about 70 yards. I saw where he had stumbled and finally I saw a couple drops of blood. I followed it for another 50 yards still seeing very little blood. Then I found where he had layed down. There was blood on both sides of the bed. About 5 yards away there was another bed but not near as much blood. I snuck out and went home. Well it was a sleepless night but at 7:30am Chase and I were back on the trail. We didn’t get far and we found another bed with blood in it. We ended up finding 12 different areas where he either layed down or fell down. The further we went the more blood we saw. I looked about 50 yards ahead of us and there he layed.

Awesome story and awesome buck! Do you think you would have found him without the snow? 70 yds to the first blood would have been difficult to say the least without snow to follow tracks in.

    Great job.

Now that is a heavy horned monster. Congrats on a giant and playing it right on the money with pursuing him after the shot. Who knows, if you would have looked more right after the shot you could have pushed him too far?? Congrats again!

Congrats on a great buck. I sure wish we could scope the old smokepoles here in Minnesota ( hopefully next season ) Just curious what bullets you are shooting? I shot a small messed up rack buck last weekend with my muzzleloader. I was shooting the powerbelt Platinum in 270 grain. I hit my deer right behind the front shoulder from 40 yards. The deer ran almost 100 yards with a very fine mist blood trail. I’m not sure without fresh snow if I would have even know that I hit it. After dressing the deer it looks like the bullet fragmented rather bad. Them last night my friend shoot a nice big doe with the powerbelt copper bullets. His shot was only 40 yards away as well. His bullet did not even exit the back side of the deer. He found the bullet right up against the hide on the far side and it was almost totally gone. Fragments were everywhere. I really like the way they load and shoot but I think I may have to find a different bullet for next season.

I used and many of my buds used Powerbelts for 2 years and had to shoot most of the deer 2 times They just don’t do any damage I also shoot the shockwave 250 with 150gr It either puts them down on the spot or they don’t go 50 yards

Question is G, did the bullet actually hit where you were aiming?

I’m surprised to hear good things about the shockwaves. I thought there was a post on here a year or so ago about muzzleloader bullets and most of the comments on them were rather poor. I tried them the first year that I shot my muzzleloader and could not get them to group well at all. some of the rips in the paper looked to us like the bullet was tumbling as it went thru the paper target. I may have to give them another try now that the barrel is more broken in.. I’m also surprised to see everyone shooting 150 grains of powder. Every time I push my powder pass 110 grains my pattern starts falling apart. I sure look forward to scoping the omega to see if the poor groupings are due to the shooter ( My guess ) or the load setup.

Thanks guys! The snow definately helped on the recovery. I am not sure if I would have found him with out it. I was useing a 250 grain Shock Wave with a 100 grains of 777 powder. He was quartering towards me considerably more then I had thought. The bullet went in about 8″ behind his right shoulder and exited his left rear quarter. Can not believe he went as far as he did, but I guess it was all down hill.

BW- Is it possible the negative responses were from Powerbelts? I too had very bad results from them with 2 deer, thank god for snow. It’s been shockwaves for the last 3 years and have had much better results.
