What is your confidence in high shoulder shots

  • #202110

    Hey Guys,

How many of you are comfortable taking a high shoulder shot or a through both shoulders shot on a mature buck?

I’ve got a buck i’m targeting and I want to be certain I can drop him where he stands or shortly thereafter, as I don’t want to take the chances of him running into the neighboring property and dealing with that mess of obtaining permission, etc. I’m shooting a .300 Win Mag with 180 Gr. Copper Solids at less than 75 yards distance. Any thoughts?

I hate to waste the meat, but the high shoulder shot will drop him where he stands.

I agree with Les. I’m in it for the meat so I wont take the shoulder shot but would consider it for an animal that may run into an area you cannot retrieve. Neck shot will accomplish both tasks but its a smaller target.

It can floor em but pretty messy There is another shot that will do the job without the shoulder being touched. After reading this thread last season I actually had a chance to test it out. The buck dropped like a hammer. Great topic Drop down 4 replies to Rugers post

Shoot them there, alittle wasted meat is alot less than loosing the deer, put them down on the ground.

Go for the red dot. I did this year and it dropped instantly. Both lungs hit as well as bottom of spine damage. Very little far shoulder waste. It was heading for the neighbors 40 and I didn’t want to ruin his hunt tracking it.

For me 2 head on neck shots and this years “red dot shot” dropped instantly. Every boiler room shot has ran 20-80 yards.

    Good Luck,

    Ferny.

I hear ya Ferny but it sure looks like some back-strap damage on the red dot. Makes sense though.

Thanks for the vote of confidence guys!

I would say that 90% of my shots when harvesting a doe are head or neck shots, but this guy would make the wall if he shows so that shot is out of the questions.

Got a favorable wind and nice weather Friday-Sunday, so hopefully I can report back and show you the damage that this shot created.

    Good information to know.

What about something that doesn’t have quite as much umph like a muzzleloader. In particular a TC Black Diamond with a 240gr Hornady Sabot and 150gr of Pyrodex?

If you are confident in your shooting, take the HIGH HIGH shoulder/spine shot (Hump shot). As far as I’m concerned. That’s the only place to shoot them. Plants them on the spot and by the spine recovers from the shock, they are dead from the lung shot.

I would think a 240gr. bullet would do the same thing? Have you seen slow motion shots into ballistic gelatin? They look devastating with the trauma. You should reloaded just in case they recover and try to get up though?

Can’t wait to hear of some more success stories.

I believe 100% on high shoulder shots! From my experience this shot folds them like a wash rag
