Got to love them cell phones.
Fair Chase is the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of free-ranging wild game animals in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper or unfair advantage over the animal. Fair Chase extends beyond the hunt. It is the very core of outdoor ethics, extending to all who enjoy wildlife and wildlands, or who make use of their resources. Fair Chase has been the Boone and Crockett philosophy since the Club’s beginning.
Wonder if Aldo and old Teddy would say the use of cell phones is fair chase?
Actually I have the Neb. Game and Parks bookmarked so I looked up what the regulations for deer were.
Use of Radio
It is unlawful to use two-way radios or any other electronic devices to
transmit information about the location of any game animal or game
bird to or from a conveyance of any type (including vehicles, aircraft,
boats, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, etc.).
So I would call this a probable case that the Nebraska authorities should and more than likely are looking into.
Kind of sad that so many big whitetails are poached.
Sorry BUT this is about as far from poaching as any other ethical legal taking of an animal. He called his dad and they got together and made up a plan. Congrats to these guys on a great buck!

Who said this deer was poached. Just because he called his dad to say that he seen a big deer. Get a clue.
I guess you guys are right!! It wasn’t poached and was completely ethical..
His cell phone rang. It was his son Mason, a junior at East Butler High School.
“Get over here now!” Mason said.
Mason was hunting from a tree stand in Saunders County and spotted a big buck and four does running across a field of grass about 200 yards in the distance. He took a shot at the buck and missed. The cartridge jammed in his rifle. He couldn’t take a second shot.
Petrzilka and Dillon dropped their tools, hustled six miles to Mason’s hunting area with their rifles and made a plan.
“We know where the deer go when they’re on the move, and so we devised a plan,” Petrzilka said.
Petrzilka and Dillon, a student at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Neb., set up in a field of cedar trees while Mason followed the buck’s path. A hill separated the two groups.
“We had it surrounded,” Petrzilka said.
Yep, sounds like he didn’t break the law by informing them where the deer had run to using his cell phone. I’m also sure didn’t use any electronic device to make the plan for him to push the deer twards them. You guys are right I’m wrong good for you.
Give me a break they wern’t even hunting, they were fixing a fence 6 miles away. Without the illeagal use of that cell phone to tell them the deer were there they never would have known. Sorry if I see a problem with this, but I don’t think I’m the one who needs to get a clue.
( wow ) And if legal shooting time was 6:30 am and that deer walked in front of u at 6:29 and u could see him clear as day u wouldnt take that shot. Get a grip guy . good deer and good for those guys.
If this article was from 1985, this conversation would be different. Imagine the junior in high school stated that he called his dad on the 2-way radio after missing the deer. The DNR would have already confiscated the rack. Now in this age of instant communication it seems that people’s perspectives have become a little skewed. It seems that people feel entitled to use their cell phone as they see fit, not how the law sees fit.
Allright.. I see things black and white. Here’s one for you.
It’s the night before opener. YOu call you dad and tell him you saw 10 huge bucks grazing on a field by stand A. Dad was planning on hunting stand B the next morning. Dad shoots a big buck by stand A. Did they break the law? Does there have to be a certain amount of time between using the cell phone and when the deer is killed?
Devising a plan is not unethical or illegal. Calling dad and saying,, grab your gun, a big buck is headed your way,,,is illegal.
This is a great topic and I can see how opinions could be formed either way. Debates/opinions/conversations are encouraged! However, let’s not forget no one opinion is right or wrong no matter how much you disagree with it.

Communicate the location of any game animal or game bird by radio or other electronic device to or from from any aircraft, vessel, vehicle, snowmobile or other conveyance one day before or during the open season.
This is ridiculous…..congrats to the hunters for that trophy I would have done the same thing
How is that any different than calling up a buddy saying “Walleye are biting like mad right now, get down here.”, “Ducks are flying in clouds right now, get down here.”?
Or getting out of your stand, running home, alerting your family and heading back out to where you think the deer will be. It’s no different and 100% legal.
If he called his dad who was in the field and alerted him of a buck moving down the ridge towards him, yes that’s illegal.
No wrong done here, just a new twist on hunting and access to information in a digital age.
“Communicate the location of any game animal or game bird by radio or other electronic device to or from from any aircraft, vessel, vehicle, snowmobile or other conveyance one day before or during the open season.”
This is unclear and needs to be updated for the digital age. This law was written to prevent guys flying over hunting grounds and radioing game locations down to hunters.
If you are in the act of hunting and see game that you need help to manage, what is wrong with calling family or friends in to assist in the stalk? Yes, talking from ridge top to ridge top in the active manner of a hunt should be illegal. It’s a gray area that should be cleared up.
Just to be safe, I personally would never mention a game animal on the phone/radio. “Just get down here so we can talk.”
