I headed back to SE MN in hope of a nice buck or another doe for the freezer. The weather on Friday and Saturday was miserable with gusty wind and cold rain. I again saw a number of bucks, but passed on each of them. This year I vowed only to shoot a buck bigger than the previous ones I have mounted.
The rut action was still hot, with bucks chasing right through the mid day hours, just no shooters for me. I found 2 dead bucks which is always kind of sad. The first was a freshly killed six point that someone left to rot. Because of the rain, I couldn’t tell if it was shot by a tresspasser during the week or if it came from the neighbors. Either way it made me sick looking at the young buck left to rot because some [censored] didn’t want to get a fine because of the new 4 point per side minimum.
The other buck was a decent 2 1/2 year old 8 point that had been dead for years. There wasn’t a single piece of hide or hair around, yet oddly, there were no gnaw marks from any critters. It was a perfect Euro mount done by mother nature.
I was also fortunate enough to have a mature doe walk under my stand without any buck trailing her. I harvested her with no track job necessary. She will taste great.
I can’t wait til next year! I passed up at least a dozen different bucks, a number of whom only need one more year. It should be a good year if they survive the rest of the bow season and the muzzy season.
