It has become an annual thing for me to go down to my Uncle Jerry’s(Zimmy101), in Pierce County every early November to get some quality bowhunting in. Last year hadn’t been the best for us in the woods, the temps were very high and it seemed like the deer movement just wasn’t as good as it should be for that time of year. Even though the deer movement wasn’t the best we enjoyed each others company and had a blast in the woods and talking bowhunting. This year I couldn’t wait for the archery season to begin because i had done my scouting and had pictures of 2 bucks in particular that I wanted to harvest. Well i figured out real quick that big bucks are big for a reason. I hadn’t seen anything but 1.5 year bucks in the stand until late October rolled around. The crazy wind had finally settled down and i knew the deer were going to be moving with the weather shaping up. Me and my climber ventured into a tree and after sitting no more then and hour the huge 4.5 year old six pointer i had many pictures of was 30 yds behind me headed on the trail right past my tree stand. He slowly walked in, i pulled back, bleated at him so he’d, and pulled the trigger. Well lets just say after seeing the arrow got through i was a happy man, not aware that “No Man’s Land” exist. We tracked the deer 200 yds and lost blood. Two days after the big six was back in the area and posing for my trail camera. I was happy he was still alive and not laying in the woods somewhere dead. I hunted one more weekend not seeing a whole lot. I knew it was that time of year. I was headed south for my Uncle Jerry’s for the weekend. Friday and Saturday went by and we had been seeing deer but just not the bigger bucks that we needed to be. We had a cool ground encounter with a 1.5 year old half rack. You can see pictures in his previous post. We had really been give’n er hard and Sunday morning was gonna be the last shot. We had decided he was going to hunt behind his house and I would take his truck and go to a different piece of land. Idk if the day light savings time switch screwed me up or my alarm didn’t go off but I woke up late. I finally got all my stuff together and headed out. By the time I got in the tree stand it was 6:45 and the sun was up. I sat for no more then 15 minutes and figured i would do grunt and bleat sequence. The wind was calm and I knew if anything was in the area it would hear it. 10 minutes later i looked down the hill and saw a buck crossing the logging road 60 yds below me. I knew he wasn’t going to come up the hill towards me unless I could get his attention. I saw the size of the deer and knew it was a buck I wanted to shoot. I grabbed the grunt call and let out a soft grunt and doe bleat, he stopped and looked up the hill. He then put his head back down to the ground, i hit the grunt call one more time and he came charging up the logging road looking for love. I stopped him at 15 yds out and let the arrow fly. I drilled him. The arrow went in right behind the shoulder and hit the opposite shoulder, getting both lungs. I thought I heard the deer crash but wasn’t sure. I got out of the stand and decided I would go back to my Uncle Jerry’s house and get him to help me track him. He was hunting behind his house. I walked back into the woods where he was hunting and kinda suprised him. He couldn’t believe it and was just as excited as me.We got back to the house got situated and headed back to the property that I had shot the buck on. I knew there wasn’t going to be blood right away because the arrow didn’t go all the way through him. We found first blood 20 yds from where we shot him, there was just enough to stay on the trail and then the arrow broke off and he really starting leaking out. I said to my Uncle Jerry,”look at all that blood up there”, and he said “ya look at that buck laying their.” It was one of the proudest moments of my life and it made it 10 times better that it was spent with my Uncle Jerry.
