I shot a 10 point buck on opening day and I’m thinking of having him cape mounted. Any recommendations on taxidermists near the Twin Cities, MN area? Thanks!

Thanks! Well I had just gotten back to my stand from lunch. I had only been in my stand for about 45 minutes when I noticed a flock of Chickadees arrived. I’m an avid bird photographer so I quietly got out my camera and was adjusting the settings. I raised it to snap a photo and as I looked through the lens there was the buck off to my left trotting by at a pretty good clip! In my head I shouted “Oh @#$&!” and set the camera down while reaching for my rifle and putting my grunt call to my lips. I grunted twice. He stopped behind a thick patch of trees and brush. I couldn’t see him. I waited for what felt like forever. I was going to be so pissed at myself if I missed this opportunity because I was taking pictures of Chickadees! He wasn’t moving. I waited more. He started trotting again. I gave two more grunt calls and he stopped – broadside to me. I got him in my crosshairs and squeezed the trigger. Nothing happened! I shoot an old Remington 35 lever action, and forgot to pull back the hammer! It felt like forever when I reached my thumb forward and pulled the hammer back and looked thorough the scope again. He hadn’t moved an inch! Thank God! I squeezed the trigger again and bang! He jumped and ran. Luckily, he ran uphill and toward the main trail, and only a couple hundred yards. I double-lunged him! My husband helped me track and then gut him. This is my third year deer hunting and my second deer. Though, this is my first deer that I shot while sitting alone. It was amazing and I was shaking and cried a little – It was a blast!

Great job!!!! If I was you I would go to John’s taxidermy just south of Hastings. He does great work, I just brought my cousins deer to him to get done. His number is 651-437-0287. I have got 2 fish from him and my dad has got 2 deer from him.

Congrats on your buck. That is great how you kept your composure and were able to make a clean shot.
Sorry I can’t help with a taxidermist in the cities. I

Great story. I too had similar experience. I make it a routine to get in my tree and pull the bow back to make sure all is good. Well this one time I forgot and I had been sitting for about an hour, so I grab my bow and pulled it back in my shooting lane when a small buck walked right in and I spotted him through my peep! Talk about shocking!

Great job on the deer…as for the twin cities i dont know how far you would want to drive, but in Ramsey, northern subarbs i have had Beyond Belief do several deer for me. It is a father/son operation that i have had do several deer and they do great work with fine attention to detail. I have been very happy with how my mounts have turned out. I do know that Jay Gregory and the guys who started Double Bull Blinds, Keith and Brooks get their mounts done there

Sorry Joel have to respectfully dissagree on this one, if you are willing to go to the south side of the TC area there are a couple really good ones. I have had Johns, mentioned here already, and also Jeff King just south of Miesville, MN(little south of Johns in Hastings). Both do great work. John did one of my deer and Jeff has done 2 and a walleye, both guys do great work! Jeff does not advertise but is well respected around the area and gets all of his work by word of mouth which is impressive in itself!

    Good job and great deer!

Um Scott… I think Joel meant he has no idea who does taxidermy in the TC area, not that there are not any good ones…. just like I have no idea

Congrats Sharon on your buck! If you are still looking for a taxidermist, I have a very good friend that won the pro division for WI. He’s only an hour away from you or I would be happy to deliver it to him.
