I know this is mostly a bow site but hopefully you guys can help me out. What is the best slug and choke combo to be using for deer hunting? I have a Remington 870, shooting 3″ shells.

Thanks for your help, good luck out there this weekend!

always heard improved cylinder was best. I think there is a rifled choke out there, then you could shoot sabots. I would shoot the chokes you own and see what patterns best with ammo you plan to use. My best advice is to be prepared by shooting your weapon well ahead of time so that you know your limitations with your equipment. From experience I can tell you there is nothing worse than waiting till 3 pm the day before opener to sight-in. Especially when things need adjusting, and 3 hours of light isn’t enough to get it done so you just take the scope off and decide to shoot open sights… Well on opening morning when a monster 10 is broadside at 25 yards and the realization hits that you should have taken the mounting bracket off too because it’s not the see thru kind you sort of just wish you were never born. anyway good luck!

My old man shoots an older 870 that has a full in it that can not be changed and that shoot great out to 100 yards, i prefer getting a slug barrel just for the shortness of one but they do work with bird barrles.

I have shot an 870 for years and I love this gun, I won’t use anything else in a slug only zone. I have a rifled barrel so I cannot give you advice on what choke to use but you might want to think about going to 2 3/4″ shells. I shoot much better groups with the 2 3/4″ shells, the 3″ have way too much kick for me especially with a 12 gage. Go buy a couple boxes of each and try them both out at your local gun range and I think you will be surprised at the difference. My first couple of years deer hunting I did use a smooth bore barrel but it has been so long I honestly do not remember what choke I used. It may be too late for this year but I would highly recommend that you think about getting a riffled barrel for your 870, you will see a huge difference your accuracy at longer distances.
