I have loved Mille Lacs since I was a kid growing up in Brainerd and its still one of my top three FISHING destinations anywhere.
But when my family and I consider a family vacation in MN, ML is never on the radar. One thing that the local organizations should consider is putting in a modern resort.
I too wish for the old days of small mom/pop resorts, but they just don’t attract like they used to. People now want swimming pools, heated or indoor. Top notch accomodations and not a little old cabin. You put something like that next to a world class fishery, and you’ll have a goldmine.
Izaty’s came close, but I know we passed on them because of the lack of a good pool. (honestly that could have changed in the last few years but that’s what I remember about the place). Think of the dollars that are escaping the ML area and are being spent less than 45 minutes away at Gull and Bay Lake.
Don’t get me wrong, many people prefer the smaller resorts. Its just that ML has many of them and right now does not have a good mix of old and new.
Something to consider!

Everything else…Isle, and then i’m sure buzzies usually gets it share of my paycheck. And that Ice Cream place in Isle….Mmmm they have great Malts! Gotta try one. And then there is the Isle Bakery, the have some great doughnuts. Not sure if that coffee shop is still open but they have wireless internet so I usually stop in there for a bit. But one of my favorite places is the little diner across from the school, love having breakfast in there with the daughter! As you can see…..I’m poor, because I spend all my money in Isle every summer. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing……

May 9, 2008 at 12:36 pm #683948That’s a great idea no matter where you go fishing. I always figured if you expect that local business to be open when you get up there, then maybe you should support them when you are there. Next month I’ll be buying my gas at the Farm Island Store and getting groceries in Aitkin

I say keep the ma and pop stores. Keep the big money out of it. Just like Alan Jacksons song “the little man” Keep big money out and enjoy the fishery for what its worth. Look at the boundary waters. It does very well and you have to haul everything in. I know its not foreveryone but I like the small stores and resorts

Stay safe, be smart, and most of all kick [censored]!November 5, 2010 at 2:01 am #201965Whacked a big mature doe tonight.
I got into stand at 5:45. I know that it is only 45 minutes till quiting time, but the stand is only about 75 yards off the road right of way along a woods. Which is a perfect stand for the quick hunts, like tonight. On the short walk to the stand i quick pull the card out of the trail cam. It took me about 10 minutes to look through the pics on my phone. Only a small buck and a few does on it. All around 9am to noon. which i kinda found strange. About 5 to 10 minutes after that i hear a cruntch. Then i see a deers head pop out of the thicket at about 30 yards. They close the distance fast. At about 10 yards i let the rage fly, during the arrows flight it knicks a branch and deflects the arrow high and to the left. As the deer leaps away i see its far back and high. At that point i wanted to jump out of the stand because i thought it was a terrible hit. And i happened to be in the same stand i lost a doe in earlier this year. But about 50 yards later i see her pile up. What a great feeling that was. I ended up hitting it high and a little back. And by the exit wound it was quartering to me, which i didnt think it was when i shot. But its a dead deer so i couldnt be happier. Now if i can put my hands on some nice antlers this weekend.
