    SO after this weekend’s hunts, I want to drop out of college to bowhunt in the fall

    I hunted every morning and night from Friday to sunday and I hunted this morning (monday) and saw the buck in the pictures three days in a row. This deer literally comes from nowhere across an open field grunting with his nose to the ground. My stand is in a back corner of an overgrown pasture and there is a wooded ravine behind me. The buck slips past me into the woods and then into the ravine every time I have seen him, except for this morning, he came running in at 20 yards in the open, but I couldn’t get him to stop. Each time I try to call to him, and he will look in my direction, but just keep moving. My questions are

    A. What calls would you try to get this buck to ease over my way?
    B. Is it possible that he will keep following this routine to next weekend?
    C. Not really a question, but why in the name of God is a 160″ whitetail running around in the wide open with no other deer around? I know it is the rut, but this is crazy!!!!!!!!

    BBD- the buck I have for my pic did the same thing. Always come in the open when I figured he was coming thru the thicket. If I were you, I would buy some doe scent and from 20-40 yards or whatever you are comfortable with and lay a scent trail in your shooting lane. If he doesn’t stop for you doing this technique, it should at the very least slow him down. BTW don’t stop going to school…… A deer isn’t worth it. IMO

    Good luck. ->>>————–>

    Can you re-locate your stand to get closer to his favorite runway? Maybe move deeper into the woods on that trail, maybe he’ll be walking more in there?

    THe dropping out of school thing was a joke I forgot the pics. THe area this deer is coming from is a wide open alfalfa and corn field. He gets within 20 yards each time, but he follows this little ditch so the only shot I have is at the spine, even with the shooting lane. I will try the scent drag…don’t know why I didn’t think of this

    I will be sure to post if I get him. It will be 22 points for team 3 the scent drag might work, because now that I think about it, he might be scent checking for the does that are usually feeding out there. And every time I went out, there I was with 4 oz of Special Golden Estrous in my gear bag…

    I know you were kidding about school. I was known to miss a class or two for fishing and hunting back in the day. Hope you get him

    I know exactly what you are talking about! I have a massive 10pnt that comes out from the cedars right before last light up on top of a bluff. Ive tried scent, snort wheeze, grunting, and even had live decoys under the stand but he wouldn’t budge. Its just a matter of time before he gives me that opportunity to drop the I believe yours will do the same. Stay with it, and man I remember that feeling of the rut and school

    The only thing I can think about is three more days. I leave Stevens Point on Thursday night (no classes friday thank god!!!) and I am gone again until monday. It can’t come fast enough.

    Snort Wheeze-LOUD. When big bucks are running with things on their mind, it can be hard for them to hear. A good snort wheeze should stop them almost every time.
