That sucks. What kind of bow do you have?

Mathews DXT-shooting easton axis carbons with rage two blades at 65lbs you would think with him only being 15yds and catching shoulder it would shatter but apparently

Good bow, only reason I asked is with that bow there shouldn’t be much of a difference in arrow path between 15 and 15 yards.

You wouldn’t think so, although maybe a couple inches difference either left and or lower and I have my hands on this guy. Regardless, I shot high, messed but definitely learned from it.

I agree, sounds like a “no mans land” hit high above the lungs. I shot a 150-class 10 pt 5 or so years ago in the exact same way. 15 yards, steep angle, shot high clean pass through, I assume just missed the spine. Deer looked at me, then turned around and walked away casually like nothing happened. I thought for sure he was gonna drop dead, so I gave him an hour or two then followed in his direction. Found him 200 yards away standing around eating some brush. Promptly ran off like nothing had happened. Never found him or saw him again, but I think he was just fine. I would bet your buck is walkin around feeling awfully lucky, kinda like the big half-rack I missed with my ML on Saturday!

Chin up Rory!! Sounds like you got some offers to help look again. Take your time, a few steps and scan. Watch for tips of an ear or antler etc… No doubt this sucks but it’s one of the risks we take as hunters and no one feels worse than we do when it happens.

    Good luck!!

    “maybe three inches below”

3″ below the spine is defintely lung. The high one lung hit, is consistent with the little blood. Odds are this animal is going to die on his feet, but he could easily travel 1/2 mile. Not many animals are going to recover from a rage through one lung. It will take some work, but you should be able to find him. Take up the offers of help that have been offered to you.

Good luck is being sent your way! I know the feeling as the same thing happend to me last year on a 145 class 10 point. It is a horrible and humbling feeling to say the least, however it is something that we can learn from. A group of us searched for 2 entire days but found nothing – that is until I saw him on foot 4 days later! He seemed as healthy as can be!!! Keep your head up – it may have happened for a reason as you may have another chance at him or even a larger buck!?!

My dad shot a nice buck 3 years ago and only hit one lung. We found little blood at the location of the shot. We would find a patch of blood about the size of a quarter every 40 yards or so. We ended up leaving the deer overnight and continued tracking in the morning. We found the deer almost a half mile away dead and stiff. It looked like he tried to bed down in heavy cover which was rows of evergreen trees but never made it out.

Since the rain might have washed the blood away I would keep looking.
