Kinda…Heres the deal, went out this evening called two monster bucks in and shot a freakn beast. Heres the deal, I shot him at 15 yard broadside from about 25ft up. I hit him behind the shoulder and high (almost hit spine, maybe three inches below). He looked as if he was going down on hoof but kept it going for a good 100yds before I thought he crashed or went through something thick. I waited two hrs before searching, found arrow, no pass through, looks as if it went in 9in and broke off 4 in him. I found just a couple drops of blood and then walked towards the location he went, walked very slowly but didnt find any more blood nor did i spook anything in the process. I was wondering should I go look for him tonight or wait it out till morning. Also coyotes are thick in area and it is sprinkling as we speak. oh yes I shot him at 4:15. PLEASE HELP

I say wait till morning. If he’s dead, he’ll still be there tomorrow. If alive, it will give him time. Besides chasing a deer in the dark is no fun. Much easier to put another shot on him when you can see your pins. When in doubt, back out……
October 26, 2010 at 2:30 am #90049The more I read your explanation of the shot. I say it’s one lung. Might have lodged the broadhead on the opposite shoulder blade??
October 26, 2010 at 2:46 am #90061Tough call with the rain that is coming down and more in the forecast. But since you already couldn’t find blood, you might as wait until morning and get a posse together to look for a dead deer. Good luck and I hope you find him!
October 26, 2010 at 2:50 am #90064At that steep of an angle I would say its a non-lethal hit. But he’s going to be really hurtin. Wait till good light and walk cautiously toward the direction he was heading. Look for a bedded deer, ya might get a shot at him. He’s not want to get up. Be ready!
October 26, 2010 at 3:28 am #90066I think it sounds like a lethal shot but you are likely to see very little blood and a bloated buck if you find him. I shot an elk in the same fashion and it died with-in 200 yds but they dont leave much blood based off that hit. Without a pass-through I assume you probably had enough angle to hit some bone or shoulder which should include lung in the mix. Wait till morning and keep your spirits up.

Thats the kind of post i like to read….My spirits are up, I dont know if it was mentioned in my initial post but he looked to be running low, down hill and tail tucked, all good signs I think. Thanks for the suggestions, I am obviously waiting until morning to find my buck. I cant tell you what was on his head for gear but know he was huge and there were a lot of points.
October 26, 2010 at 12:40 pm #90093Please keep us posted gobblestopper. Hopefully you will find him this morning.
October 26, 2010 at 12:50 pm #90094Good Luck GS. Based on your description I think your buck is dead. Go get him!
October 26, 2010 at 3:15 pm #90119Best of luck. Beware of branches and trees falling today. It’s crazy out there!
October 26, 2010 at 4:15 pm #90132Hope you get your hands on him, best of luck in your search we will all be waiting for some pictures!

This is gut wrenching I seriously feel like crying. I am guessing this buck to be somewhere close to 180” -190”. It was an amazing hunt, and my first sit from this stand. I hit the woods at 1pm got to stand about 3 after walking at a snails pace. Decided at 4:10 I would give a grunt and rattle sequence and to my surprise two monster bucks came in on a string. To make a long story short i think I simply blew it. I actually think I used my 25yd pin instead of my 15, I dont how that happened other than buck fever got to me. I was never nervous until after the shot, so just unsure how I blew it. I dont even want to hunt anymore I am completely disgusted with my self…Sorry for this long ramble of nonsense but just need to vent my frustration. Thanks for the support and maybe the vultures will give me a clue in the days to come.
October 26, 2010 at 8:26 pm #90191Hey Gobble…did you take some of your buddies with you this afternoon? No matter what the size of the deer, I would get as many people as possible and search for that guy high and low! I wish I lived close enough…I would volunteer to look for that beast! Sorry buddy…I can’t imagine how you feel right now!
October 26, 2010 at 8:27 pm #90192How did I miss this today??
Gobblestopper. Sorry to hear the bad news. Don’t give up, keep looking and hoepfully something will show up. Secondly, many of us have been there and it sucks. I’m not going to tell you different. However it happens, if it hasn’t happened to you, you haven’t hunted long enough.
The best thing to do is try to learn something from your encounter/experience and move on. Go do soemthing to get your confidence back. Shoot targets, shoot a doe or have a memory like and NFL Cornerback & just plain forget about it and hunt the next chance you get. Honestly, you will NEVER EVER totally forget about it but when you are out hunting you need to put it in the back of your mind and don’t let it back in until you are done!
I hope you find him and keep us posted!
October 26, 2010 at 8:29 pm #90194As owner of a locker plant and have processed thousands of deer I can safely say you’ll probably see this beast again. You wouldn’t believe how many old bucks carry broadheads, rifle bullets, slugs and injuries from vehicle collisions. Besides being the most magnificent animals in the woods these animals have a remarkable ability to survive very severe injuries. If major organs aren’t damaged, deer can heal up almost anything. I have a feeling this will make you all the more determined. Remember if bowhunting was easy it wouldn’t be fun.

That sucks. What kind of bow do you have?
Mathews DXT-shooting easton axis carbons with rage two blades at 65lbs you would think with him only being 15yds and catching shoulder it would shatter but apparently not. Still cant believe this

There were three of us searching for him from 8-untill 10 and then I went by myself from 11-3
October 26, 2010 at 8:38 pm #90197I hear you guys that mention if it hasnt happened to you, you havent hunted long enough but, why couldnt this be a freakn doe, not the biggest boy in the woods?
PhunnyfarmPosts: 47October 26, 2010 at 9:05 pm #90198Sorry to hear of your troubles gobble…but I would say, keep with the search if you can. It’s only been 24 hours. He’ll be bloated, but not competely coyote food yet. Plus, going out for one more search will only make you feel better that you searched as hard as you could, and could give you quicker closure if you come back empty one more time. Just a thought.
Good luck, and thank you for sharing your story with all of us. It’s a great reminder that hunting isn’t just high fives and polaroids. It can be extremely difficult and an emotional roller coaster sometimes, and your story is humbling for us all.
Sounds like you are a responsible outdoorsman though, and showing as much remorse as you already have shows a lot about you.
Good luck!

I can say after a 5 hour chase last Thursday. They are an incredible animal and I too wouldn’t be surprised if he is still alive. Keep your chin up kid Climb back in that tree and get after em again
October 26, 2010 at 9:24 pm #90205Rory I am on vacation so if you want to go back and look tomorrow I am available, I might have another hunting partner who would be able to help as well. Let me know.
October 26, 2010 at 9:25 pm #90206Gobblestopper- I hit a buck very similar to the way described your situation. I think you hit “no mans land” below the spine and above the vitals. Another time while standing on the ground I had a completeness through on a doe in “no mans land”. I didn’t find much blood and felt horrible because I couldn’t find her. 2 weeks later I saw her with a mark on both sides running around like nothing had happened. I can’t be certain but, it’s very possible the buck is still alive and hopefully you get another chance at that Monster. Also, even the best hunters in the world get anxious and worked up when a trophy comes into view. Keep your head up and get back at it as soon as you can. Good luck!!! ->>>————–>

Good bow, only reason I asked is with that bow there shouldn’t be much of a difference in arrow path between 15 and 15 yards.
