I put my daughter Tia on the fast track for the youth hunt on Oct 9th. We spent an hour in my archery lane in the basement today shooting the BB gun. The plan was to shoot the 22 but Mom put the kibosh to that one so we’ll be going out today to shoot the 22 at our property near Fall Creek. She started high, but once I got her holding the gun correctly and tucking the bead down tight in the fore sight v she starting shooting groups on her first day. Granted we were at 15 yards but a good start- she’s 10. My plan is either a new 243 or scoping my old 30/30 this week. Any thoughts on this? I will probably limit her to 50 yards and under. The food plots are barely that deep or wide so we should be set there. I have a number of decent bucks around but she’s got a full green light. She wants to shoot Trip, the buck I wrote about last year. He has a huge 6pt on one side and a mess of 3 or 4 points straight up out of the base on the other. I think I am more excited for her to hunt than she is. I can’t wait. She’s also asking for a new bow but that will be a couple years down the road.

Best of luck Tia and I’ll be wishing for you to score on Trip!!

As for gun, even the old 30/30 with iron sites is simple yet affective weapon at 100 yards or less. I’ve shot a few deer with that weapon. It’s been a few years though, but I gotta imagine the kick is a little more than a 243??? One thing about the 243, it will last her years and years, potentially her whole life.

Good Luck Marty and Tia Any deer would be awesome

If it’s in the budget I would buy her a new 243 and give it to her so she can use her gun.
