A tent city in Minnesota in January? Maybe a good deterrent.
Lets ask Sheriff Joe if he’d like a part time winter job in Minnesota.
April 24, 2008 at 12:45 pm #678049I’m sure the inmates in MN would love to pull the permanent ice houses in and out by hand while wearing pink snowsuits.
April 24, 2008 at 5:13 pm #678253I have relatives that live there and their view of him is not so glowing.
BTW..They are NOT criminals in any way shape or form.
There are two sides to this story also.April 24, 2008 at 5:16 pm #678255Any info you could pass along about the other side of this fella would be appreciated.
You are right, there are always 2 sides to every story.
April 24, 2008 at 7:30 pm #678363Their position is that the guy is constsntly running for re-election, which one has to do as a sheriff, vs implementing effective policy. Kind of like the Rich Stanek situation & 35W bridge collapse & the resulting DVD produced.
Google him & also he is listed on Wikipedia. There are pro & con links on Wikipedia. The nice thing about Wikipedia is that BOTH sides weigh in.deertrackerPosts: 9237April 25, 2008 at 1:53 am #678488Quote:

How do you figure they are not criminals? In reference to your other comment about him constantly rerunning instead of implementing policy. Even if he were to implement policy and not rerun for sheriff, the new sheriff could just redo the policy manual. I believe that he has done amazing things for that county (As far as jail stuff)and wished more would be willing to do some of the same things.

I believe he was referring to his relatives “not being criminals.” As in good, honest, hard working residents of the county.
April 25, 2008 at 2:39 am #678499Exactly James. They probably pay more in taxes than I make. Just do some due diligence and research. The STORIES I’ve heard (like stuff posted on the web is anything else) is that the other law enfocement agencies are less than thrilled. BTW…It is a cousin who lives there & her husband is a memeber of the legal system. They spend a ton of time in the summer at Wahkon & that is where I’ve heard the opinion. BTW… If you feel that strongly about the guy help out and buy some of the many items that Joe has the sheriffs dept retailing.
deertrackerPosts: 9237April 25, 2008 at 1:49 pm #678624It was a long day yesterday and when you said they are not criminals I thought you were talking about the jail population not being criminals. I wasn’t saying your family are criminals, Unless he’s a defense attorney.
I rather support my states economy. I just wish more people would be willing to treat criminals like criminals.
DTApril 25, 2008 at 3:35 pm #678696I was born & raised in AZ, so give me the website i’ll buy some of his stuff. Instead of talking bad about sheriff Joe, maybe you should write him a letter thanking him protecting AZ and the rest of the country.
April 25, 2008 at 4:11 pm #678713I am also interested to know exactly why people disapprove of him? Other agencys could disapprove of him simply because his ideas work where others have failed. I respect your relatives opinions, I am just curious as to exactly why they hold the opinions? It’s like when a teachers union gets angry at a specific school because they hold their teachers accountable. Just because somebody is angry, doesn’t necessarily mean it is just! And NO I don’t think poorly of teachers, I was just using it as an example. I am just looking for both sides of the story! I like what I hear about the Sheriff because he has measurable achievements which is why I tend to side with him as opposed to the other side which is based a lot(atleast what I have read/heard) on opinions so I am anxious to hear about measurable “non-achievments” also.
April 25, 2008 at 4:54 pm #678525Sheriff Joe has getting alot of heat over the way he’s been takeing care of the illegal immigration problem. Remember, he’s doing what he was elected to do, get the bad guys off the streets.

Exactly!! The argument could (not validated in my opinion) be made that he is too “harsh” on his people , but as far as whether he is doing the job he was elected to do do, I would say the argument is one sided. In my mind there are two types of people: One group that is sympathetic for law abiding, successful people and another that is sympathetic to unsuccessful people. I am part of the former group and I am not sure either side will ever change the other’s minds.
April 25, 2008 at 5:09 pm #678729“Nicklebag Joe, his nickname by his “troops” when he worked the street, is seen by many as a grandstanding prims donna who cares more about publicity and winning the next election that actually being the chief law enforcement officer in the county. he does not do a good job bringing the different local agencies together, i.e effective gang taskforces, and has very little trust in the latino community.”
I’ve never considered the man I’m quoting here as a soft on crime, he can’t be w/ his job, pantywaist. I have never lived south of the 45th parallel so my opinion is strictly one from afar. I kind of think that often time the people that are the best at their jobs simply go about achieving and leave the trumpet blowing to others. Remember that after the county commisioners, in most urban counties, that the sheriff is the next highest paid ELECTED PUBLIC OFFICIAL.April 25, 2008 at 5:20 pm #678731Interesting. I still found a lot of opinion in the response. I would like to learn more about “why” people have these opinions so that I can better adjust my opinion of this person without knowing him. Too often we look at “not being able to bring people together” as a bad thing. A lot of times it is, but there are times that taking a hard line for what is ultimately right, while alienating those who disagree would be a better choice. It would be like asking inmates what they think of the warden. Because the warden can’t bring the inmates “together” with the guards, doesnt mean he is the wrong person for the job. There is too much relativism out there today, we forget there are still rights and wrongs.
April 25, 2008 at 5:44 pm #678739Here is the link to the Wikipedia information that talks about the critisism.
Most of it is based on various lawsuits file by prisoners for assault allegations by his guards. The lawsuits have cost the tax payers 13 million in claims.
Based on what I read in Wikipedia, I’d be willing to take the bad with the good. Way to go Joe!!!!!
September 15, 2010 at 3:54 pm #201327Well it looks like weather is going to be a nice & crisp for opening morning. Now I just need to decide where I will be sitting in a tree. Up North at the Family Ranch we will be looking at 38 degrees for a low on Saturday and 55 for a high. Down at the Honey Hole a lil warmer @ 44 & 60. North Dakota is 41 and 54 degrees and there is always is a few Metro spots.
Now I just need to decide where to sit my in a tree. Either way it won’t matter as I will be in a tree. I just wanted to wish everyone GOOD LUCK this season and may your arrow find its mark multiple times!
Be SAFE, wear your safety harness and drop da .
September 15, 2010 at 5:10 pm #74433I would say your best option would be in a tree period! Good luck to you and everyone else heading out this weekend. This is almost as exciting as opening morning of turkey season….almost!
September 15, 2010 at 5:39 pm #74418While a tree sounds good, I think I’ll be hidden in the corn field, on the ground. Nothing like having deer walk just feet away on a field road in between two corn fields. Talk about a natural funnel!
Good luck everyone!
September 15, 2010 at 5:58 pm #74405I’ll be down in Buffalo County – trying to put the smack down on a big fat Doe or a Big Buck!
Good Luck to you all!September 15, 2010 at 8:35 pm #75361Good luck to you guys Rob. This weekend is my son Kolton first youth opener for him. Wow is he excited an so am I . Good luck to everyone
DONOTDELETEPosts: 780September 16, 2010 at 12:31 am #74555Good luck, hope you pick the right spot. It is hard enough to pick the right tree, but the right state thats a lot more complicated. But like you said at least you will be in a treestand.
