Anyone have any favorite scents to use early season such as trails end #307,buck nip or acorn wafers. How about calls doe in the can or tickling the horns a bit. I have none and have 4 maybe 5 shooters coming in to the same plot. Only one has ever showed himself in the day time. So any secrets to get them on there feet during the day time would be helpful.

    Good luck to all.

I am no pro, but I find early season… you have to put in your time. Try to set up as close as you dare, to bedding exits and try to intercept them coming to your plot. The problem is, time is working against you every night The trick is to be mobile also, have different spots for different winds. Every night you should learn a little more about his habits, I used to start sitting in stand, 2 weeks before opener, almost every night until dark and pattern and find their entry trails and their possible exit points. This was all very easy when I hunted 200 yards behind my house… its much tougher now, but if you can, try these things. Good luck

No pro here either but personally, I’m not a big fan of scents and calls in September. I would scout and see where he is entering the field. Once you figure that out. He is probably staging not too far from there (probably within a 75 yards most likely). Hang a stand on that trail he is coming out on, but hang it back off the field where he might be staging. Possibly hang two stand for different winds that you might encounter opening weekend. This is a lil aggressive but IMO it would all depend on your property and hunting personality.

Just like deer some hunters are aggressive while others are more laid back and rather not take chances. Both of these types of personalities work in the field to harvest deer and mature deer. You just need to find out what you want to do. My personality is a mix up sort of a blend of both. Just remember not to be stuck inside a box. There are times where you need to sit back and let things happen but then there are times when you need to get aggressive.

However, come the first week of October I am bigger fan of calls and scents. Also don’t be surprised if these deer change their feeding pattern soon. With the beans I have been seeing, along with the amount of Acorns I have observed in the woods the last few weeks, I would have a back up plan and that would include having a stand or 7 smack dab in the middle of some oak stands. Once the beans start to change colors, the beans lose their palatability for the time being. With this change the deer love to feed on as many acorns as possible.

    Good Luck!
