Penn reels were good, top of the line 20 years ago and I’ll bet thier still good today. I went through 3-716z ultra lite reels and the only thing that went wong with them was the bail springs after constant use. I replaced them because the bail loop had a wear grove in them so I replaced the whole reel, then bought another. Penn reels are good reels and I’d buy one again, I maybe will in the future. I don’t know much about thier rods.

I picked up some vintage 209’s for my heavy cat and carp rods, and I love em! they’re probably almost as old as I am, (in my 30’s) and out of a set of 4, one needs new drag washers and one needs the clicker replaced….

    that’s all!

I think the only grumble i have is the low gear ratio, but for 20 bucks apiece I’ll overlook it….

We have one in the box with leadcore on it and it has been a good reel. Drag is smooth and no problems with it at all.

Penn makes fine line of reels.

I have a Penn 320 GTi level wind mounted on a 6′ Seeker stick. Perfect tuna stick…I caught several calico bass, a dandy red snapper and a 27# yellowtail last spring on the far side of Catalina Island.

I tend to believe they focus more of their energy on the saltwater business.

My experience with the 209’s pretty much same as previous posts. Have 8 of them, and all vintage that I purchased from an old timer 15 years ago, when I began rigging up for Lake Michigan salmon fishing. Have not had a single problem with any of them.

Don’t know about the rods, though. Have been very staisfied with the Daiwa Heartland rods for Lake MI trolling. You can buy a 7.5 footer at Bass Pro for about 25 bucks.

So I finally picked up a camera and put it out last thursday and went to check it tues to find that I had the flash off so I had some pics but couldnt see them. so I put it back out and went to check it today and had around 65 pics in the past 2 days so not to bad. dont think any of them are wall worth yet but maybe in a year or two. the biggest happens to be a 6 pointer but anyways I cant judge deer that great yet so let me no if you guys think any of them may be shooters or half decent. thanks

“Shooters” are deer that YOU will be happy harvesting! Doesn’t matter what other people say or think. With that said, that 6 point is a nice looking buck! The others are nice deer too and will get much bigger if you let them grow. But like I said, if one comes by you this season and you decide to harvest him then he would be considered a shooter! Good luck!

X3 I personally just wanted to shoot a buck a bit bigger than the year before and then eventually I got to the point I am at now. You have great seed there for the future! Good luck!

Great pics!!! Like was said you are hooked now, I love checking my trail cam pics almost more than deer hunting, almost.

One piece of advice I would give you is not to check your cams too much you do not want to wreck your spots by visiting them too often. I check mine every two weeks, I started out with one cam also and now I am up to 5.

I agree 100%! Your property has great potential for big bucks. If I were you I would eye ball that 6 point as my first buck. Then the others will be bigger than him next year…and so on and so forth. Keep going bigger each year!

You are set for a great time!

I always say if the buck you shot gets you all jacked up and rattled then you did well no matter how big it is. That’s what it’s supposed to be all about.

We in time tend to raise the bar for ourselves to add to the challenge and better what we already have from year to year.

Good Luck and have a great season.

After you round up another 20 days worth of pictures it will be much easier to decide what is a shooter to you also. Someone may show up that will make the decision much easier. Or, if in my case you will have the same 3 bucks show up at every camera over and over again and you will wonder where in the heck the 3 shooters are from last year that you followed all of last year and after season. Why oh why havent they shown up yet? Cant beat the anticipation though.
