So, these deer are now 2.5 you think? Will be interesting to see if they grow anything worth talking about by 3.5. They seem to be lacking in the bone department.

Agreed, I would think that they would be bigger, not sure they are the same deer. If they are you might want to take them down!
here’s some food for thought, i don’t know were mr. ritter hunts but the fact that he’s from hastings his hunting land could be in zone 3 and if that is the case, with the new “slot limit” in zone 3 and looking at the pictures niether of these deer (from what i can see) are “legal shooters” and they may never reach that status and will live and breed and pass there genes on for years to come.
i’m not trying to start anything here, just wondering what your thoughts are on a situation like this. i’m not against APR, i understand why the dnr is doing it.
Very interesting SLACK! I hadn’t picked up a regs book yet for this year, so i had to check out the dnr site to find out what you were referring to.
SPECIAL REGULATIONS IN 300-SERIES DEER AREAS
ONLY (338 – 349)
Antler Point Restriction
• A buck must have at least one 4-point antler in order to be legally harvested.
Bucks with less than one 4-point antler are not legal to harvest.
Refer to page 85 for examples of a legal buck.
• The regulation is in effect during the archery, 3A, 3B, and muzzleloader
seasons.
You’re right, both of these will be walking around adding more to the gene pool if they are in that area. Although I understand and support QDM, I don’t like the fact that you can’t cull these odd balls if you so desire to.
This regulation will be implemented for a
period of 3 years and then re-assessed through surveys and public meetings.
If there is continued support, the regulation will be continued for 3 additional
years.
What are others opinions concerning this?
These regulations have been very successful in some areas of the country. I’m not sure what side of the fence I’m on currently.
These two bucks are classic examples of what you don’t need around. However, think of all the basket 3 point racks that will be allowed to survive another year. They will mature into decent 4 point bucks that will possibly make someone a trophy.
I know this is a very heated topic for many. I’m really curious to see what these units do for trophy caliber animals come 3 years from now.
Good point, guess I didn’t pick up on the fact you were in Zone 3.
I have stated in the past that I support the 4 point rule and think others will be on board in a couple years. True these bucks will get to live but as the population balances you are going to get a bulk of the breeding done by more dominant and superior deer due to increased competition. With an increase in buck numbers only the strong and genetically superior will breed.
As it is now with so many does, many inferior bucks do the breeding because of a simple lack of competition.
