my dad has always told me that if a deer has his head down it is safe to pull your bow back because he is too busy looking at what he is eating.

so what do you think… if a broadside buck is eating off the ground, is pulling back safe?

I would say NO not always!

IMO if you can see his eyes he can pick your movement out!

Does not mean he is eating. It is probably safer than if he is alert but he still could notice the movement and pick you up. I always try to pull back when they walk behind something or look away. I will do my best not to pull back if I can see his eyes no matter what he is doing.

I agree with the posts above. One thing that I try to do is to pace my movements with the deer’s movements. If the deer is still, you need to be still. Deer at a slow walk, you can move slowly. Deer moving quickly, you can get away with relatively quick movements. Best bet though is to make you’re movements when their vision is blocked by foliage or tree trunks.

    Very well put, shednut.
I always try to follow that and it’s true with turkeys, too.
