Heres a story from a deer I shot during the archery season 10 years ago.
My brother in law Tim and I had seen this buck in the area we hunted a few times in the prior two weeks. We were archery hunting after work on Tuesday November 16 when he came out 150 yards from my stand. He was following a doe. They were meandering out of bow range for 45 minutes to an hour. Then they were coming towards me following the creek. The buck was on my side of the creek, the doe on the other side. Then the buck started to head back to where he came from an hour ago and I thought that was the end of seeing him. I grunted a couple of times with my call, but I don’t think he heard me because he was making a lot of noise walking in the dry weeds. He turned around and headed for me, following the trail I was watching. Then I looked back at the doe and she was watching me. The buck on my left, the doe was on my right. The buck stopped 15 yards from me behind a bush, looking at the alert doe. There was an opening in the bush where I could get an arrow through. I started to draw my bow slowly while I watched the doe. The buck was still watching her. She snorted and took off. The buck also took off, then stopped broadside 30 yards away. It was a long shot for me, but I figured I better take the shot or I wouldn’t get another chance. I drew back and let the arrow fly. I heard the arrow hit him, I got down out of my stand and looked for blood. I found some blood, but I couldn’t tell which way he went from there.
Tim and I came back at 7:00 p.m. with a lantern and flashlights to find the blood trail. We found the trail and followed it for 150 yards. Then we heard some noise up ahead of us. We figured we kicked him up from lying down. We stopped and listened, the noise seemed to get closer to us. Tim said we should come back later, so he would lie down again. Then it sounded like he was walking in circles. The noise stayed in one area. You could hear his antlers banging against the brush. I didn’t want to leave, in case he would get away. I wanted to see where I had hit him. We were in tall weeds, so I held the flashlight over my head, shined the light and started walking in the direction of the noise. I got too within ten yards and to our surprise found another buck had been fighting the dead deer and their antlers were still locked. I told Tim the deer should be able to get loose the way that they were locked together. The buck was going nuts trying to break loose when we approached and just as I said that, he got loose and ran right by us. We both turned and hit the ground!
The buck stopped 50 yards from us and looked back. We shined the light on him then he took off again. He was a little smaller then the one I shot. We walked over to the dead buck and could see he had been dead a while. His eyes were dry. There was a 10-yard area where the weeds were matted down and there was hair and blood all over. There were gore marks all over on him and his scrotum was also torn. I think he was paying him back.
He was an 8 pt, #230 dressed and had a 17″ spread. He scored 138 P & Y. His main beams were 25″ and the G2’s were 12″. Shot in Dakota County, MN.
