Feel guilty!

After not having shot a deer in 2 years, I was itching for some venison in the freezer. Right after the snowstorm last week I saw a few deer in my food plot at 3:30pm. Wisconsin had a doe only gun hunt last Thur – Sunday so I hiked out and sat down at 3pm and by 3:35pm I had a doe down.
With the severely reduced deer herd I almost feel guilty for shooting the only doe I have had a shot at in 2 years. Unfortunate that things have gotten so turned around that it has come to me feeling like this. But, she sure tastes good, guilty feelings or not!

You should feel terrible for killing that poor wittle deer.

If you purchased a tag, went hunting, filled your tag, and feel guilty about it….you may want to reconsider hunting.

It is unfortunate that all the media hype, and people who hunt 8 hours out of the deer season and dont see a deer have the people who put the time/effort in feeling guilty about shooting deer. Its really to bad this is the way it’s become. The day that I feel guilty is the day I stop hunting.

Darrin – I felt a little bit the same way when I shot my doe last Thursday… But only for a (VERY) short time.

    Congrats!

Not sure what’s hard to understand about it? If you feel guilty about it…why hunt? No reason the people who are killing deer should feel shame for it.

Sorry guys–I just read the thread title. “Feel Guilty!” and that was the way I took it.

There are many forums that people actually are feeling guilt to post their pics of deer due to getting slammed for killing does. I just don’t think anyone should feel guilty about it.

I did not shoot anything this year because I felt the heard was to low, I felt guilty about taking an animal for that reason. I may be misunderstanding what he is saying also, but if not, I get it. Either way, we have a responsablity to know the condition of where you hunt and try to be good stewards of the land we hunt. I think that if you have passed a few years without taking an animal, that is not an issue. IMO

I’m going bow hunting this weekend to try and get a deer in the freezer. And trust me, I’m not going to feel guilty…I’m feeling hungry! Hopefully one of these ladies is going to meet Mr. Muzzy!! And I can definately understand feeling a little guilty but hey, if you’re able to harvest a deer legally and paid for your license, then more power to you. By the way, a friend of mine is letting me hunt on his property because he doesn’t bow hunt and he has plenty of deer.

Even though it seems to be an “off” year, the landowner of the property I hunt on saw 40 deer in his fields the other night (the ones he was able to see/count anyway)… There’s always a few more deer out there….

    Congrats again!

C’grats on the doe! Came home tonight and saw 6 does in a field and not one buck anywhere else. Been like that in my neighborhood most all season. Good job. Mother nature will have does dropping twins and triplets come this spring to make up the difference.

Congrats on your doe! Darin, I understand your feelings and as far as feeling guilty, if a true hunter doesn’t feel some sort of guilt for ending an animals life they don’t deserve to be in the woods. As weird as it may sound I spend a short private time with my harvest and pay my respects to them. I read somewhere a while back about indians paying respect to a kill by placing some greens in the animals mouth so they have food in the afterlife. I’m not some spiritual wacko either by the way but a mild feeling of guilt should be ONE of the many feelings a hunter expeiences after the kill.

I agree with you Copper. There is always a feeling of sadness for taking the life of an animal and they do deserve a moment after the kill.

Does doing the “happy dance” around him = a moment???

Sure does Pat…a “moment” that no one needs to see!

Guess I was looking at the guilt a little different. I feel the same way about the shooting of a deer, always a bit of sadness that comes with it, respect. I was refering to the guilt associated with overharvesting in a depleted area. That is what I see in our unit and has made me less interested in harvesting animals for harvest sake.
