Finally not going to go deerless this year. (Whew!!)

Hit the woods during the doe season yesterday thinking my chances were pretty good. Huge Snowstorm on Tue/Wed, then clear, sun, COLD on Thursday. Perfect conditions to put those deer on thier feet in search of food. And the place I hunt has TONS of food. The Landowner planted lots of food plots… Corn, oats, chicory, rape, turnips, etc….

In only 24 hours since the snow stopped, that corn field was completely blanketed with tracks. Whatever deer were left in the area must have be in and out of there all night/day.

I got up in the stand about 3:30 and immediately saw 6 bucks. They cleared off, then I saw 4 does. Shot the biggest doe. Actually it was a bad shot in the sense that I was way off my aimpoint (gun is very accurate, but apparently I’m not ), but on the other hand, she dropped in her tracks from a spine hit, so I finished her off with another shot and called it good.

2 degrees above while hunting, 1-2 feet of snow to drag her out in. Photo doesn’t do her justice, but she was a BIG doe.

Check out the video!!! (Kill is at 9 min 10 seconds on the video timeline… Bucks and doe video prior to that time)

Correct me if I am wrong, but if the farmer mowed down the corn for the deer to eat it is considered baiting and not agriculture anymore. I would assume 2-3 acres would be more than the 2 gallon limit in WI? Better check and be careful.

Nice shot In MN, not sure in Sconny, you can hunt over a field ??? Not cut, cut, chopped, doesn’t matter… now pouring a pile of corn, is “placing” bait…. I don’t think he has anything to worry about.

Super Do – interesting question, although I would consider planting, growing, and mowing in preparation for next year’s plantings normal agricultural practices…

I contacted two separate people in the DNR (chat line and wildlife line @ 608 266 8204) and they both gave me the same response. They said they didn’t see any problem with it. They said collecting and putting the food into piles might be a different story, but mowing and leaveing it lay would be considered a normal agricultural practice, and would be considered the same as hunting over normal legal food plots. I guess I don’t see much difference in a deer’s eyes between corn on the cob on the standing stalk and corn on the cob laying on the ground..???

Nice Job, Congrats and Great video Mike

Thanks for sharing your harvest with us.

Mike, a lot of farmers would be in trouble as I know quite a few that practice the same thing with their corn. Also think about it this way Super Do, every single food plot would be considered baiting under those rules. As far as I know growing any type of plot for deer is not illegal or considered baiting in MN or WI. No matter the substance/crop: Corn, Beans, Clover, Rape, or Turnips.

Good point to bring up and think about though!

    thanks for the video Mike!

All the deer in the early part of the video were bucks? I could see horns on two of them, but not the others. Laptop screen just don’t cut it!

Believe me, I had to look hard, too. I had the binocs out for the whole time they were there — three had at least 6 points, one was a spike, and there were two nubbins. The biggest buck was at least a 2.5, more likely a 3.5 just based on body size and characteristics, but didn’t really have that “shooter rack”…
