    Hi Gang,

Well thought I’d post a quick note on my first time out trying for a deer. I had a chance to go out on Sunday with a new friend that invited me to hunt his private property. He offered me the chance after reading a post stating the fact that this was my first year at giving this a try. Basically he was “paying it forward”..LOL.. Some one had taken him out and so he offered to take me.

We got out about 2:30PM on Sunday, afternoon temps were in the low 70’s. We set up in a two man stand just inside a tree line with some well used deer trails and right along side a newly harvested bean field. We sat there for about two hours not hearing or seeing anything. About 4:30 a combine that we had thought had harvested all the beans in the area made its way up towards where we were sitting.. to say the least we figured we were done.

We decided to move to another stand next the the bean field looking down into a draw.. the deer path was on my left.. not much of a shooting lane, but still had one. We sat for another hour and a half, saw some turkeys moving down the hill. I heard some deer moving off to my left.. there was a small drop off next to the field where the path was coming from, so when I heard the noise I knew what it was…

Let me tell you.. just hearing the deer off to my left and suddenly realizing that I might get a chance to draw back and take a shot made my heart start racing. All the practicing I had been doing and shooting started to fill my head… trying to recall all the steps.. LOL.. the deer moved off and never did appear on my side of the stand.. but wow what a rush… .. We climbed out of our stands and on the way back to the trucks we saw four deer.. course they saw us too..but they didn’t move till late.

I’ll get another chance in a couple weeks, the weather should have cooled off by then and maybe we’ll see more deer moving earlier. I can’t wait to try again. All I’m hoping for is a chance to harvest a deer.. and my goal is to take a good shot.. my biggest concern has been hitting a deer bad.. though I know I won’t have complete control, that’s my hope… so till next time… good luck all!!..

Sorry to hear you didn’t get a shot on the first outing!

I’m not quite yet convinced the deer are fully in rut yet this year. Seems to me like next weekend will be a better time for catching them in rut.

This weekend they were only showing light beginning signs of rut behavior, and the temperatures didn’t help everyone out much either!

    Good luck next time!!!
