    Mike,

On the Saint Croix, shad, cut sucker, shrimp, and cut sheephead have all produced well for me (along with crawlers), but I have not tried these baits up on the Rainy. Part of this is my reluctance to try something new. I know crawlers work, and since you only get to fish with one rod up there, I don’t want to risk a 60″ fish passing up a bait when I know they like crawlers.

I haven’t broken my crawlers up like you mentioned. I might have to try that.

One thing we noticed last year, but I think it might be a coincidence. We had two flats of crawlers. One that was packed in the dirt they came in and one that I have washed and packed in commercial worm bedding. It seemed, for one day at least, that the sturgeon had a distinct preference for the crawlers from the bedding. I don’t know if there’s anything to it, but I like the bedding anyways because it’s a lot less messy.

Everyone has their preferences on their bait.

I prefer cut bait and shad. Many times this reduces the smaller fish with bigger bait. I have full confidence that it changes with the seasons. In the spring my theory is that worms/crawlers.Later in the year the shad and other fish become a little more active in the same areas as sturgeon.

I have talked to many people o this and every one has their go to bait but crawlers seem to always produce.

What have you guys been seeing? I have been in the woods in the a.m. until 9-10 each day, out for an hour and sat from 11-12 until dark teh last 3 days expecting to see good midday movement. I haven’t seen &%^&%&% until that magical last hour each day. I know I need to be out there but its hard to sit that long and not see much. Anyonce else been out midday and seeing anything?

I can say this…. my wife is home all day (so she says ) and we live kinda in the woods. She will always tell me, there was 3 does eating acorns again, in the yard, or I seen a couple deer across the creek…. but today at noon, out of the blue she says, “Whats going on with the deer ?” She said she seen Bucks (don’t see many of these) and Does, running around like they didn’t know what was going on, in the yard, in the woods, over the creek, back to the woods… that could only mean 1 thing to me…

Not seeing much near Eau Claire but we had very few doe (thanks to the Wis DNR ) on cams this year so I am guessing the bucks all left for the red light district . I’ll just keep sitting hoping for some cruisers to come by.

I have been sitting from morning til dark since last Saturday and can honestly say I’ve seen just as many deer between 10am and 2pm as I do between 6am and 10am. That being said, I’m have a heck of a time seeing one past 3pm. The way my week has been going I should just get down at 2 and head for the tavern.

I would have thought mid day this week would have been the best. Last Sunday I seen 3 bucks and 3 does from 11:00 to 12:30.

Nice pic gut, I have some miday pictures also but for whatever reason I am just not seeing them, maybe its more to do with where I have been sitting and not that they haven’t been moving. As usual I am zigging when I should be zagging!

Too bad I’ve only been able to hunt mornings lately!!
