I would just like to put my .02 cents in here. I really hope that this all turns out for the best. I have also heard all the rumors. Unfortunetly rumors fly when big deer are taken and people get jealous! I for one am going to believe he is innocent until proven guilty! The DNR will do their do process but if they cannot find enough evidence to convict then I will be very happy for the hunter. If they find enough to convict then they have to do their job.

Every single year I hear rumors when big deer are shot that they poached it, didn’t have permission, shot it in the spotligt etc. etc… There are a lot of jealous people out there. Lets hope it stands up. There is no denying that its a potential world record, atleast lets give the deer the credit it deserves!

Also having your location as “one step ahead of the warden” probably doesn’t give you a lot of credibility!

i can honestly say i am in no way jealous of him. i am happy that someone got to harvest this animal, and it didn’t just die of old age, which i was told it was due… but, i do hope that all of this gets sorted out. because it seems pretty odd that they are just investigating when they confiscate the rack from the taxidermist.

and if he actually had the balls to shoot this deer without a tag, tag it with someone elses, and then stupid enough to claim it has his own. i hope for max penalty…

hopefully everything is just rumor and everything comes out clean. but there just seems to be too much information floating around from multiple sources.

Like Scott said, I’ve heard the rumors too. Some of them wild and presumptuous, others possibly true. Until the facts get sorted from fiction, I’m going to personally wait before developing an opinion. However, like Perch mentioned, hunting the general area and fearing just such a thing on our hunting grounds makes me angry at even the possibility of it being true.

I don’t like to put my location due to all of the “e-scouters” out there.

I agree with you. The third pic definately does not look like the same deer. Not even close in my opinion. The mass isn’t even close, and the base of the beams doesn’t come close eiter. Unless the angle is just wierd…but I definately think its a different buck. Still a nice one, but not as big as the monster.

    Yep…what he said.

It truly is sad if these rumors do pan out to be real. It’s always great to see a monarch go to a hunter rather than a vehicle or coyote food, but not to a law breaker and poacher. As stated above, I guess we all have to wait and see how this all pans out. If in fact it does shake out as stated, it sure would have been nice to see this buck go to someone that’s far more deserving.

Well I just read the other day that the DNR is trying to raise the fines here in MN for poaching. Doesnt make much a difference if eveyone is shooting these monsters and if you get caught you get a slap on the wrist. I still cant even believe they allow spot lighting here in MN. You are considered an outlaw if you do that where I came from in IA. But I never heard so much about poaching until I moved up here either.

Another note. First time posting on here. Good site so far.

I actually saw this rack at the taxidermist on November 3rd. Made my 155″ 10 pointer i was bringing in seem sort of insignificant! Simply incredible! I hope he was taken legally. Regardless, you never know….it is nice to think that the next time you have a doe come through and you hear a grunt coming through the brush, one like this could appear. Get out there, have fun, and stay warm….oh and shoot straight.

so if we break it down by points, what is the MN and/or world record 3 pointer score? I may have it beat with an old rack in my garage.

    FAIL

I wonder if it was shot illegally or simply shot by a hunter without the proper license. I would like to beleive that at least that animal was taken in a hunting situation and simply not tagged vs. being shinned and shot in non-fair chase situation.

It is a shame either way.

I’m pretty sure it was done with malice and broke every law in the book doing it.

    Just got this today 11-13-09.

    Subject: Big 8 Pointer

    By PAUL WALSH, Star Tribune

    Last update: November 12, 2009 – 3:56 PM

A “monstrous” trophy buck taken in southern Minnesota during bow-hunting season has been confiscated, and the hunter who killed it was charged today with a host of gross misdemeanors.

Troy Reinke, 32, of Cannon Falls, was charged by summons in Goodhue County with 13 counts, among them exceeding his limit, failure to register a deer, leaving big game untagged and illegal transport of big game. The charges allege that Reinke was licensed to only shoot one deer but took three, with the last one being the prized whitetail buck on Oct. 31.

The state Department of Natural Resources is trying to determine whether the 8-point buck’s rack is of record proportions, though no formal 8-point records are recognized, said DNR spokesman Rich Sprouse. The DNR, in a news release announcing a news conference for midafternoon in St. Paul to discuss the case, characterized the buck’s antlers as “a record-book deer rack.”

The buck — including the rack — was confiscated Friday after having already been butchered, Sprouse said.

Reinke, who has a criminal history in Minnesota of convictions for fifth-degree criminal assault and domestic assault, was not immediately available for comment.

According to the charges, Reinke at first told conservation officers that he only shot one deer. But under later questioning he acknowledged killing one doe and two bucks, with the third one being the trophy deer.

Chuck Corcoran, a Hampton taxidermist who processed the deer for Reinke, said today that the buck was “monstrous to see,” weighing in at 269 pounds.

Corcoran, who described himself as an experienced scorer of deer racks, gave this one 192 inches gross and 188 net. “It’s something you’ll never see in your lifetime,” said Corcoran, adding that he has heard of only one other 8-point buck taken in North America that is even close to those measurements

For comparison purposes, Michael Gregoire, of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., took what could be a world record 12-point buck with a bow and arrow last week. The whitetail deer weighed 240 pounds, and the rack has been unofficially scored at 217 5/8 inches.

In the Minnesota case, there is no evidence to back up speculation swirling on various hunters web forums that the deer had been shot with a firearm during bow-hunting season, DNR officials said.

Corcoran backed that up, saying, “I 100 percent witnessed an arrow [wound] and no gunshot wounds.”

Along with jail time and fines, if convicted, Reinke is also subject to reimbursing the state for the three deer — $1,000 for the trophy buck and $500 each for the other two deer.
