Well i,m headed out in the mourning to try and recover an arrow and hopefully an 8 pt. p@y buck my 14 year old son shot at twice tonight. I was watching some setaside(about 400 yards away from my son and the deer) when i noticed a real nice tall tined 8 pt.buck start pushing a doe towards my son’s location. The next thing i know i hear the horns crashing through the thick stuff and there the buck is staring in his direction. My son gave a snort wheeze and the deer started back towards him but then thought better of it. I watched the best i could(to dark for the binocs by then)and think the deer bedded down, could have been 1 of 4 different deer as he went back to the group, then they went over the hill. I love the energy the kids have when they shoot at their first deer, it’s like they drank a case of jolt or mt. dew. Hope he sealed the deal, if not there is always tomorrow. The first arrow was found to be missing any evidence of deer, the second arrow was not found(pretty dark and tall grass), so tomorrow will tell. It will be his first deer kill and a p@y to boot, pretty cool.

Hope it works out for him, he has been very patient and wanted to shoot a good one for his first. He says i want to be a hunter dad, not a killer(makes me proud to hear talk like that).

How many times do you have to hear “when in doubt back out” before you get the hint

TESTY AREN’T WE! I TYPE IN CAPS BECAUSE I’M A CRAPPY TYPER. GEEEZ CHILL OUT! I MEERLY ASKED IF HE WENT BACK OUT TO LOOK FOR BLOOD,ARROW , SIGN OF A HIT? I KNOW MORE THAN ANYBODY THE VALUE OF ENCOURAGING YOUTH INTO OUR SPORT.I’VE RAISED 3 BOYS AND TOOK EACH AND EVERY ONE OUT WHEN THEY WERE SMALL. THEY EVENTUALLY GREW UP TO BE GREAT ARCHERS AND EVEN BETTER BOWHUNTERS. I’M PROUD TO SAY THEIR SOME OF THE MOST ETHICAL AND KNOWLEDGABLE HUNTERS I KNOW.I’VE FELT THE FATHERS PRIDE ON EACH OF THEIR FIST KILLS.AND WATCHED 2 OF THEM KILL THEIR FIRST P&Y BUCK. I’VE VOLUNTERED AND COACHED NUMBEROUS ARCHERY,TRAPSHOOTING, AND FISHING YOUTH EVENTS. I’VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR OVER 40 YEARS. I STILL REMEMBER BY FIRST BUCK WITH A BEAR PHILLY RECURVE AT 12 YEARS OLD.SINCE IN OUR COUNTY THEN SOLD ONLY 12 BOW LICENSES THAT YEAR. NOBODY WAS THERE TO TEACH ME. I KNOW HOW THE ACTIVITS WOULD LOVE TO SEE OUR SPORT DIE. I LOVE OUR SPORT! IF IT SEEMS LIKE I AM GETTING TOO OPINIONATED ITS BECAUSE OF THE HARD LESSONS I’VE LEARNED TO BE THE BOWHUNTER I AM TODAY. IF I’VE OFFENDED ANYONE I’M SORRY. IT WAS NEVER MY PURPOSE. MY CONGRATS TO THE YOUNG ARCHER IF HE FINDS HIS DEER OR NOT. IT TAKES ALOT OF GRIT TO BE A TRUE BOWHUNTER. ESPECIALLY A 14 YEAR OLD! KUDOS!!!!

Saw him this mourning bedded down by but not far from last night. We are going to give him one more night(may have hit him a little back and high), don’t want to kick in his adrenaline and loose all hope. Headed out right now to see if he is still bedded in setaside or went back to chasing does. I’ll keep you posted after dark. The buck is actually a 9 or 10 point not an eight.

Didn’t see any sign of the deer, and yes we waited an hour or so last night and tried to find any evidence, none. He hasn’t let it get to him as he was back in the stand tonight hoping to see a wounded buck. I plan on going for a walk tomorrow to look for a white belly in the woods, the outcome doesn’t look good.

WELL SOUNDS LIKE YA DID YOUR BEST.HOPE YOUR SON DOESN’T GET DISCOURAGED. BOWHUNTING HAS ITS UPS AND DOWNS. AN OLD BOWHUNTER TOLD ME WHEN I TOLD HIM THAT I’D LOST ONE AND THOUGHT IT WAS THE WORST DAY BOWHUNTING. HE ASKED ME IF I WAS GOING TO QUIT HUNTING. I TOLD HIM NO! THEN HE SAID “IT’LL GET WORSE”. HE GRINNED AND LEFT. I THINK OF THEM WORDS EVERYTIME I GET DISCOURAGED.IT GETS ME EVEN MORE DETERMANED. MURPHY FROM MURPHY’S LAW HAD TO BE A BOWHUNTER.

    Norseman –

I know you said you type in caps because you are a “crappy typer”, but would you mind considering just hitting that caps lock key when you post on IDO? All caps makes your posts quite difficult to read. Also, as we have seen before, people tend to take caps as a way of yelling, and seems to make your message come accross more harshly than maybe you intended. Its always difficult to “computer communicate” without non-verbal cues and emotion, which is why IDO has a great set of graemlins (and caps lock) to help us show our true intent the best we can over the internet. Honestly, I think those graemlins help us to better “all get along” (compared to other internet forums who don’t use graemlins)… Much easier to express our thoughts, and not quite as much guessing about what other members really mean. Same thing with the caps lock deal…

Not always easy, but I’d bet you’d get more pleasant responses if you considered not using all caps.

If not, its a free country, so you’re welcome to do as you please — but it might make your time on IDO much more pleasant.

    Much appreciated – Thanks!!

Just made it back from a 2 1/2 hour walk looking for any sign and not a trace of a wounded deer. I did manage to do a little scouting for gun season and see a couple of doe. Well all i can hope is that the boy can learn from this experience, if not and he doesn’t draw blood, we’ll have to start with a few lectures on more concentration. Thanks for listening.

I’m sure he has learned a lesson! You bow hunt long enough and it will happen to everyone. Tell him to keep his head high and get back in the stand! A good cure for a bad shot for me anyways is to hit the target a few times and get that confidence back! Good luck and thanks for the update!
