WHAT STAGE OF THE RUT ARE WE IN. HUNG AROUND WITH LITTLE G AND BRAD THIS PAST WEEKEND AND THEY HAD LOTS OF GREAT ENCOUNTERS, BUCKS RESPONDING TO RATTLING AND SO ON. ON OUR LEASE IT WAS RATHER SLOW. JUST ACROSS THE ROAD ON LITTLE G’S HIS BROTHER HAD LOTS OF GREAT ENCOUNTERS ALSO. WE HAD TO GO HOME MONDAY AFTER HUNTING (GOT HOME 3:45 AM GOT TO WORK TODAY AT 8 AM) AND HOPE THIS COMING WEEKEND THEY WILL STILL BE CRANKING. OR START ON OUR SIDE!THE TRIP DOWN AND BACK ACROSS WISCONSIN ON 29 WE SAW FEW DEER AND HARDLY ANY ROAD KILL. NORMALLY WHEN RUT IS ON WE SEE LOTS AND LOTS OF DEAD ONES. ALSO HOW WILL THIS WEEKENDS MOON AFFECT ACTIVITY DO YOU THINK? HAD TO BE A DAD THIS WEEK AND THEN COMING DOWN SUN THROUGH WHENEVER ONE FINALLY HITS THE DIRT. HOPEFULLY NOT TILL JANUARY

I think it is getting started right now. As long as it stays cool I don’t really think the moon will bother. I shot one last night at 4:45pm he was out looking. Strap yourselfe in and sit all day. Good Luck!

    Give it time….

By this weekend into early next week you will really start to see things pickup everywhere in the upper Midwest!

The road kills will begin to pile up and you will see deer driving to and from work. Although the rut will be earlier this year than normal were all jumping the gun a little too early because of spotty reports of good action.

This is my prediction IMO…than again what do I know right LIP!!

I’d say end of the pre rut. Little guys are starting to go a little crazy but the big guys seem more concerened about ridding the area of other mature bucks than they are looking for does. with the earlier full moon i’d say after this weekend things are on. I just hope it cools down.

I am outta here at 4 and on my way to the tree

I was out in Buffalo County with Brad and G this last weekend. All I know is it was the best hunt I have ever been on! I missed a 145-150 inch 10 pointer, it happend so fast, I heard a chase coming my way, all of a sudden the Doe and Buck were running 30-35 yards out in front of me, I had just enough time to grab my bow, set the release on the D ring, pulled the Mathews back, he was running down the hill, I grunted at him – he stopped on a dime, to which I didn’t expect. No way was I going to take a shot at a running deer. I settled the pin on him, arrow was away, then I heard a bing. I had hit a small branch between me and this Big Buck. He stood there looking at me, I grabbed another arrow – it was too late, he was on the move. I waited 45 minutes to get down to verify that in fact it was a miss. I lowered down the bow, watching it so it would land softly. As the bow made contact with the ground, I looked in the direction where the Doe and Buck went, I saw another buck standing 60 yards in front of me. Wow! I slowly retrieved my bow, loaded up an arrow, getting ready for a second chance. As I peered toward the buck, I noticed it was a different buck. He must of been chasing that Doe, too. He kept standing there, stomping his right front hoof, looking at the Doe as if to say, look at me, I’m right here – she wanted nothing to do with him. They made there way within 8 yards of my stand. This time it was a 9 pointer, probably only a 125″ buck with a huge body – around 230 lbs. I let him walk.
The evening hunt took place on the same stand. I had an ancounter with a spike buck at 5:30 p.m. No activity until 6:15p.m. As I glanced down the ravine, I noticed some movement – it was a buck, it looked like a shooter. I saw him moving up the ravine downwards from where my stand was. Approximately 80 yards out, I hit the grunt tube. The buck lit up! He was on the move right at me. This 8 pointer, 130 inch class buck was one pissed off animal. He was raking tree’s, all the way up to me. At 15 yards out, he made 2 swipes with his huge hoofs, then started up towards me, again. This buck, (Browler) was right underneath me, you could hear him making huge deep gasps of air, trying to get any and all scent of that other buck he heard. Browler stayed around the stand for 3-4 minutes looking for the other buck, he worked his way up to where I had missed that 10 pointer earlier in the morning. All I could see was a siloute of him standing here sniffing something. I put up the binos, I saw him leaving what he was sniffing, to my surprise, it was my lighted “tracer” arrow lighting up. This verified my miss earlier in the morning. What a hunt in Buffalo County!

That’s some heart pumping action Craig, I agree with what has been said that it’s just getting started and the action seems to be spotty. A co-worker killed a 160″ 10 point last week tuesday morning that was chasing a doe, but I’ve yet to see any real chasing going on. I start a 13 day vacation on friday…I’m chompin at the bit

I’ve been hunting everyday since last Thursday and it’s been real SLOW in the stand in my area.

Sunday morning driving to my stand I came across a 2 1/2 year old 8 point following a doe thru a bean field by the road. Not more than 40 yards from the doe in the field were a doe and two fawns which the buck never looked at.The doe eventually ran across the road into a pine thicket which he followed suit in front of my truck. That was my last sighting of a buck till this morning when I had a 6 point go by my stand at 9:15 and 15 minutes later a 5 point follow suit.

Looks like we may have a few more days before the rut shifts into gear!

I’ll be back out tomorrow morning. What else am I gonna do??? I’m on vacation till November 9th!

still pretty slow here been seeing a little more scrapes being worked up and freshened. Saturday was my best seen 5 bucks one would have been 140 class ten but his left main beam was busted. Two other bucks had a sparring session. the bigger buck worked over two scrapes. Did see two fawns alone also and two small bucks harassing a doe. Sunday morning two small bucks doing their normal thing. Monday morning on the way to the stand two bucks were really getting it on no sparring session there all out war. Today was a big fat zero morning and afternoon. Think another 3 or 4 days and the chasing should start up I hope.

If your a moon phase believer the waning moon should start the major chase phase which would be from Nov. 3 on thru about Nov. 16 and the peak of the rut should be 3-4 days prior to the 2nd full moon after fall equinox. If the entire breeding season lenghtens out to 28 days then the beginning of the curve for actual breeding would begin around Nov. 12th on thru Dec 10. Because of the late full moon this year that would imply a later rut then usual but much stronger on the front side of the breeding curve then the backside of the breeding curve.

I dont live by it but it seems to be a good reference for me as to when to expect chasing to begin and breeding to begin. I like the latter part of the chase phase for the bigger bucks as they seem to hold off or remain under darkness a little later then smaller bucks. My target dates this year for big bucks acting stupid would around Nov. 11-18 but you can bet I will hunt my behind off every possible day from now until Dec 1.

On the flip side my gut and common sense tells me that it only takes one doe to slip into estrous a little early to make every buck in a particular woods to go bonkers! Maybe something like that will happen for me this weekend

In my opion we are in the pre rut. The full moon is the second of November which is the rutting moon.
They should be rutting in full swing around the 7th and hot and heavy “the big chase” around the 11th.

Haven’t seen any chasing yet. Have seen the bucks looking though. Hopefully things will kick up to high speed soon. I only have 1 more week of vacation then it’s back to every other weekend, for bowhunting. The does must be in hiding. I haven’t seen 1 doe this week. Only bucks and fawns.

    Hey Guys,

bucks are getting cranked up thou. Last Wednesday I saw two
bucks both small but that was the first two buck night of the year for me. I’m going out in the morning on the 31st and hopefully I’ll see a couple of more bucks.
