October 23, 2009 at 3:08 pm #200805This is my second year hunting in Mn. My first year I shot a decent buck and this year I had the opportunity to get back out there again. I started to hit it hard over there last weekend (my unit in WI was T-zone) and was seeing a lot of deer and even a few good bucks, including one encounter with a real nice 8 pointer. So I decided to concetrate my efforts on filling my MN tag so I could Concentrate on Wi for the rut and not have to worry about the MN gun season screwing up my bow hunting over there. The area I hunt is very open so I threw out a buck decoy and made it look like it was making a scrape. Then a doe and a fawn walked by with a STUD 8 point at about 125 yards. After a grunt and a snort weeze from me. The buck put his legs together, “freshend up” his tarsels and marched, ears back and puffed out, right to me. He never took his eyes off the decoy and when he went to circle in front of my decoy that was 15 yards away, the buck offered me a 5 yard shot. The shot was good and the recovery was short. The buck didnt make it 50 yards. This buck is a Tank, 6 inch bases, 10inch G2’s. 17 1/2inches wide. 137 4/8 gross. deer is easily 200+lbs dressed. (try dragging that through waist high marsh grass.) This was an amazing hunt and a ghost deer. A friend of mine and I have spent a lot of time in this area over the last few years and have never seen a buck this big.
Now it’s time to hit the homestate hard and then down to iowa dec 5th…. This could get to be an expensive year……

October 23, 2009 at 3:35 pm #64513Living the life! Love it, Your 09 season has a healthy start and what seems like great oppurtunities. Good luck in all your time in the woods. What kind of decoy were you useing?
October 23, 2009 at 3:50 pm #64516Flambeau, Masters Series, Boss Buck… the key to decoy sucess is naming the decoy. Mine’s name is steve. Sometimes you even need to talk to em a little.

October 23, 2009 at 4:20 pm #64529Awesome Buck!
The old decoy did the trickThanks for sharing a great story and pictures
Nothing like the Fall Evolution Predator Camo, That’s one my favorite camo patterns that I have for late season clothes in a heavy fleece from Dakota Outfitters made back in the 90s.

October 23, 2009 at 4:49 pm #64542Congrats on a great deer man! Love the mass. What happened to his side in that first picture? Coyotes get to him?
Will you be hunting first shotgun season in Iowa?
popeyoungPosts: 3October 23, 2009 at 5:00 pm #64547I love predator camo. To the human eye it isnt that spectacular but in black and white it destroys the human outline. So even if they see you, they can’t tell what you are.
October 23, 2009 at 5:12 pm #64553Congratulations Kevin on a great buck! Question for you, when he circled around your decoy, was he going to approach it head on? Or was he going to approach it from behind? I’ve seen them do it both ways and I’m always curious. The reason I ask because I feel it’s important on how you position the decoy so you can remain downwind as well.

Do I dare ask how you came up with the name Steve?

Great story great job decoying and calling him in that had to be very exciting!!!
October 23, 2009 at 5:42 pm #64562nice job on that pig. glad to hear your strategy worked thinking of employing the same tactics
October 23, 2009 at 6:53 pm #64579Being the start of the pre rut (IMO) I decided to put the decoy a$$ into the wind and made him look like he was making a scrape. The buck I shot was circling around to get to the front of STEVE, or down wind of him.
October 23, 2009 at 11:26 pm #64632Congrats on your buck, good to hear all that stuff they sell actually works, your right though looks like you set yourself up for a spendy fall
