Knowing a spot to fish is good; but don’t you need to know about a few dozen spots and a 1/2 dozen methods? And don’t you usually have to go spot hopping to find those big girls? I think the GPS coordinates deal is overrated. There are ways to shorten the learning curve like hiring a guide. But time on the water and getting good at a number of methods is what it takes IMHO. There is a reason that a number of guys on this website catch trophy fish multiple times year in and year out. I’m not one of them.

    But I’m working on it.

My buddy lives in North Carolina and is a member of a hunting club. Their policy is that if you shoot a buck you have to put it on the wall, so he is trying to decide if this is big enough?
What would you guy guess as a score on this buck?

    Thanks,
    Ben

    What is a shooter?

This is asked a lot, what really qualifies and buck to be a shooter is answered at heart by the individual that is starring it down. Unless you have a club with special requirements, if your are the one starring at a buck or even a doe and it gets you all messed up with excitement and your all jacked about the whole big picture then do yourself a favor and harvest the animal in front of you. It doesn’t matter what other folks think, it’s your moment, your great memories and your awesome hunt take it. Don’t let others take it from you. We all constantly raise our bars as we spend more time in the woods as we put the challenge upon ourselves.

Another thing to keep in mind is where this buck lives in relation to how big bucks grow in that particular area. Are there other bigger bucks around that he has seen or have on camera? If not, he’s a shooter in my book.

To answer your question – my guess is that he would gross around 140.

All, The picture Ben posted is from me and we have 3 bucks around the same size on our club property. We have 2,000 acres of soy beans, sod, and hardwoods and we only have 4 members with trail cameras so there really is no telling how many are there. Here is the problem. We have a 4 month hunting season in NC (Sep to Jan 2nd) and our club has a you shoot it you mount it policy. I have shot a couple dandy’s in NC and WI. Although I agree it’s a great deer we haven’t reached the rut yet so I haven’t had a chance to see them get all “wacky” and running all over the place. I saw this deer at 405 yards this weekend and he was hot on the heals of does so I didn’t get a chance to let him meet his maker. I’m sure I will get my chance again. Thanks for the vote of confidence on the deer!!!

Welcome to In Depth Outdoors Mike W!

As others guys have stated above, only you the Hunter now if that is a Shooter. Personally, I would not hesitate with a bow, unless I had my sights on a certain deer, which has happened from time to time. However, with gun depending on the potential of the property I might hold off. Good luck and let us know how it goes the rest of the season!

Welcome to IDO Mike I would say that buck scores around 130 gross, will have a big deduct for 4×5… I would like to see another angle, he looks W I D E .. but I can’t really tell. Another question I have…. are you limited to 1 Buck in NC ? In other words, would you be done ??? This also plays into my decision… how early in the season is it…. Am I also to understand you can rifle hunt for 4 months ??? If you can… I hold off and take him later… sounds like you guys got a nice set-up going there Again.. welcome to IDO
