Nice work Eric!
Now BD, admit it you are the one who will be pulling out this rod even when the wife isn’t along.

I probably will, it’s a nice rod…I hope Eric took note on the blank, I have a feeling I’ll be ordering another after this one gets a test run.
She received her Bday present early, gave it to her last night, she seemed awful happy, she was grinning from ear to ear…now she wants pink line for her sealine. Makes V day easy!!
Eric, she loves it…perfect! Thanks again!
BIRDDOG
Well thank you all for the nice comments. Glad that she liked it Shane. I hope your on the top of her good list for a while now And yes I did take notes on what the blank is. Let me know if you need anything else.
Thanks again everybody
How to outwit the leery old Buck of a lifetime or maybe just improve your equipment to see more deer period? This question is echoed more than any other topic be it a sport shop, hunting camp or on the web sites.
I am going to throw a few out and let’s see what works for you folks
There’s always the never ending argument on carbon treated clothes but we will look beyond that
I do use products both carbon lined and not. I also avoid all the smelly stuff used daily during the off season. I try to use unscented hunting soaps for myself during the season and all my clothes and shower towels are washed in unscented soap. Have you ever showered up with hunting soap then grabbed a towel from your normal wash and it had all those nice enhancing clean perfumed smells well if you use that you just became a perfumed scent wick – better then sweat yes but a attention getter in the woods – very possible.
I wipe all of my equipment down with a rag using Hydrogen Peroxide topical solution that’s 3% peroxide solution on the average.
I use this on everything – Bow limbs, riser, grip, wrist strap, release, every arrow, anything that you may touch is cleaned, hunting boots included as well as the stirring wheel.
Hunting boots
Old rubber boots will leak out scent – foot odor as well as leather boots – pull out your boot insert pad take a whiff nasty yes – a mega scent wick if there ever was one.
If you spray down with a unscented scent killer before walking into the woods – try spraying down your cloths again before packing them up when done at the end of the day – helps keep the unwanted odor out of your storage bags, and it states on the most bottles “ works for days when dry”.
Just a few tips here let’s see yours
Jeff
I might have to try that boot liner suggestion I haven’t thought of that and im sure mine REEEEKKK
I don’t own a carbon suit, but one of the things I do other than washing my clothes in baking soda or scent free soap and air drying them before storing them in a scent free bag is to take some branches off a cedar tree and rub them all over my hands and clothes before hitting the woods. Seems to work as a great cover scent.
Not trying to hijack this post, but I don’t always have time to air dry my clothes and sometimes throw em in the dryer. DO you guys use the dryer sheets and if so, what kind???
Just hunt the wind I think that is the most important thing, if you have a 3-4-5 or even older buck downwind your odds of him staying there are about zero unless the wind is going over the top of him.
I have tried most of the stuff and had very little luck with it but maybe I’m doing something wrong, but I do know one thing the wind is fool proof

You aren’t supposed to use dryer sheets if you use carbon suites. This is because the suites will absorb the scent the dryer sheets give off, leaving the suit useless and won’t absorb YOUR scent

I know I may sound crazy but my hunting clothes and the dryer my little wifey uses everyday always makes me nervous.
I just never trusted the fact of mixing my hunting clothes with an area that favors all those smelly fabric softener dryer sheets she likes to use. I will clean the lint catcher and at times do my hunting under garments. Also when I cook my Carbon Clothes I turn them inside out and then put the garments in some scent free (for this purpose only) pillow cases and tie the end shut one garment per pillow case.
If possible I like to hang my clothes outside to dry and I also hang some of my hunting clothes between hunts outside in our gazebo to air out
I heard of folks using the hunting scent sheets for the dryers and I guess they work great for adding a woods/earth scent, but I don’t think my sweetie would prefer that.
I don’t know if it had something to do with my hunting buddy trying to dry his late season soaked wet jacket after a heavy slop/snow fall and he forgot to take out his glass bottle of Tinks 69, what a mess.

Seems like everyone tries to take care of reducing their scent and together with playing the wind I think we have better than a good chance of going undetected. One of the problems I run into is even when I do those things, the bucks I am looking for don’t always read my playbook and come in down wind of me. Especially in the big woods of northern Wisconsin where food sources are spread out and bedding cover is all over the place. If you can’t pattern the deer it’s tough to play the wind.
I keep my undergarments in sets in separate storage bags I descent so I don’t contaminate them each time I go in to my scent lok bag. If I’m not using something for a while it’s stored separately til needed. The boots- generous doses of scent elim powder and yes, get those liners out and dryed off. Use a boot dryer every night and then store them in a flat rubbermaid container after spraying them down.
I have never understood how lots of these hunters go through rediculous amounts of changing, packing, laundry, spray downs and everything else… and then jump into their truck. Is it a scent free hunting truck? Mine isn’t, I go through all the motions, keep clothes in the totes and bags, only scent free showers from september on, wash hunting clothes often, spray down every layer when I put it on and do it all in the field just before I hit the woods. Boy does it suck when it’s cold and seems rediculous when you get winded every once in a while but when you see them downwind and careless every once in a while… it makes it all worthwhile to me.
Dryer sheets? I use the dead down wind sheets and think they work. Not for making the clothing scent free but to soften the base layers and not add any unnecesary scents.
i honestly don’t think the the sprays work great but i keep buying. carbon clothes…never washed only burned inside out in the dryer. coon urine works great for a cover scent. as far as boots i use the boot dryer after every hunt, and i use a product called Odorcheck that stays in the boots when they are not in use or being dried, they work awesome! when you’re neoprene/rubber boots like lacrosse, and muck don’t stink you know it works.
I do pretty much the same as everyone else. One thing I can add is to wash your body with a product called betadine. It’s an antiseptic that surgeons use before performing surgery. It will kill the bacteria that lives on your skin and in your hair and it’s the bacteria that makes you smell, not sweat. It will give your skin about 8 hours of protection to bacteria growth and B.O.
Mainly hunt the wind!
I know for the most part we all pay attention to the wind, I also believe that as crazy as we can be at human scent prevention it’s never 100%, with that the winds are great for shifting around on you when your all setup.
So the bottom line is all these little things can add up.
Many here have brought up some great steps in this game. Cool ideas lie Odorcheck & Betadine soap are starting to surface which in turn many of us can also try – here again Hunters helping Hunters to be able to hook up on a animal that gets them pumped that’s what this site all about!
No matter how crazy your ideas are let’s hear them , some folks here are still trying to learn everything possible to hook up on their first deer and if they can pick up just one or two simple steps here to make that whole plan come together then we all had a part in that awesome moment.
