I know him and will see if he has the time to tell the story. It was a very impressive animal in the back of his truck last Sunday morning.

September 23, 2003 at 1:41 am #288first of all i’d like to say what an awesome buck. and to think that a deer like this was wondering the woods within miles of my house.
as far as the UNOFFICIAL NEW WORLD RECORD VELVET goes this is what i have been hearing. P&Y DOES have a seperate class for antlers still in velvet, but any deer in velvet CANNOT be considered any sort of “official” world record . this is just what i’ve been hearing from other sources. i’m not trying to take away anything from this amazing deer, but i think that “pending world record deer in velvet” is misleading.

September 23, 2003 at 3:25 am #277Why not jake? I mean, getting a deer with the fuzz on is not as common as some may portray it. If it’s going to be given a class, how can there not be a record? That’s like saying there’s a harvest class in which no entries can be technically qualified for! It’s ridiculous in it’s logistics. If there’s a catagory, there has to be a record. To say the records aren’t official says no one is recognizing the catagory. If no one is recognizing the catagory, then why is there a class? What’s the point? Honorary mentions for potential record holders?
I’m not saying it isn’t so jake, just asking what sense could it possibly make to have a recorded catagory without records? If this is true, it needs to change.
If the concern is growth, I’m certain that is all done by the time we’re hunting them. They cut off the blood supply for growth in August and it is hardened and shed rather quickly. As for adding girth, isn’t that the point of having a seperate catagory? That layer of tissue doesn’t amount to much but could make a small difference overall.

September 23, 2003 at 4:04 am #389I don’t think the Boone&Crockett or the Pope&and Young has a class for deer in velvet. I believe the velvet has to be removed before it is scaled officially. There is also a 60 day drying period. None of this takes away from the outstanding quality of this animal. Years of effort pays off in a big way.

September 23, 2003 at 1:40 pm #258hey stillakid, i agree with you completely . it doesn’t make any sense to have the largest deer ever in the velvet class but then not have it recognized as a world recored. why they don’t recognize it is beyond me . that’s just what i’ve been hearing from others around town.
Gator Hunter,
B&C does NOT have an individual category for velvet, but P&Y DOES. to be official with B&C the velvet has to be removed. i’ve read somewhere that it only adds about 2-3% to the overall score, which is not a lot, but aparently enough to make a difference to them.September 23, 2003 at 1:40 pm #259655hey stillakid, i agree with you completely . it doesn’t make any sense to have the largest deer ever in the velvet class but then not have it recognized as a world recored. why they don’t recognize it is beyond me . that’s just what i’ve been hearing from others around town.

September 23, 2003 at 11:44 pm #274alright….i did a little research myself and this is what i found out. i was a little off on the wording in the above posts. P&Y does NOT have a seperate “class” for antlers with velvet, but they accept them into the recored books with velvet on. so that is why it would not be considered any type of official world recored from the P&Y club . to be eligable for B&C the velvet has to be removed.
sorry if i created any confusion. i guess i didn’t have all the right info.

We are not going to be showing the photo and information on the possible record buck. We feel that until the official measurement and certification of the buck is finished it would be best to hold back any further information. This decision was made to show our respect to the bow hunter.
Please continue to check back to http://www.Magnumsportsx.com for new pictures, information on new product and hunting tips. We will follow up on the new potential world record velvet buck after the official 60 day waiting period.
Thanks and come again.
If you go back to the top of this thread you will see that I changed the link to a pic.

October 7, 2003 at 1:41 am #469hey guys,
just another update on this big brusier, this buck will NOT be able to be entered into the P&Y record books. apparently the bow that was used had more than the allowed 65% let off. i heard it was around an 80% let off.
it’s still an amazing buck but i bet he would have liked his name in the record books .

October 7, 2003 at 1:04 pm #482I’ve heard sooo many rumors about this buck. The DNR took it, he shot it a week early, he shot it on the neighbors land, aliens , you name it. A guy at work here’s wife knows the hunter’s wife and was going to get the skinny from her this past weekend. I’ll see what he found out from her and report back.

October 7, 2003 at 1:51 pm #488I hear ya Newt, I have also heard a TON of rumors about this deer!
I heard one that he sold the rack to Cabela’s for something like $250,000. Does anyone know if this is true?
