decoy and a can

I like most people just can’t find the deer. I think I have seen 10 deer on ten sits and I saw 7 one night. My spots I have seem to be what I would consider prime spots. So I went to the bullpen and put in the magic man.
Everytime last year my decoy was out I had deer come within shooting range. I know this move was unorthodocs but it really can’t hurt a thing.
So I set the decoy up and waited. Its about 6:30 but cloudy and I start to see shadows moving towards my decoy its still dark enough that I can’t tell if their coon or deer or what they were. Well the light finally comes and its two yearly does. Finally deer things may turn around today. So about 7:45 I think why not just go all out.I grab the doe in a can blow 4 long blows from the bottom of the can. Five min. later here comes ricky fork horn and billy basket rack circling the decoy like indians on a wagon train. These two guys are on top of me and I can’t move. After about 10 min. I glance to my right and see more deer about 150 yds away.So I don’t pay much attention to the ones on the hill im watching the ones below me all of a sudden they look up towards them and do to. I look up and see what i think is a stud so I go for my binoculars and up pops another one. At that instant my right leg started shaking so bad I think it was bouncing a foot off my stand. So the little guy go troting up to the big ones and actually pass right by them. By now I have picked out the one I wanted and they are on their was to the decoy. The best i could figure the front one was a 100 or so in 2yr old and the back was about 130 in 3 yr old but this one was chocolate with white tips and crab claws. I looked at him for a long time trying to add stuff up in my head. They finally got with in 60 yds. I have decided that i’m going to let them pass. I could almost hear the big one say get your ars up there and see what that thing is i’m staying back here. So he stayed back and his head on a swivel. Meanwhile the other one is at about 25 yds broadside circling. That lasted about 15 min. then he slowly walked away and here comes the big one. I think my knee almost hit me in the face my leg was bouncing so bad. He came in to about 45 yards for about 5 minutes then turn and slowly troted away. i have know idea what would happen if a shooter came in. I would probably fall out. Last year the one i shoot came racing out of the woods stopped and shot it took about 15 seconds. Its tuff watching the slowly and slowly make there way from 150 yds.
I have never experienced two nice deer come in and present shots on top of that. I was shaking so bad I’m surprized they didn’t see me, it was an awesome experience.
So back to my point don’t be afraid to do unorthodocs things you just never know.I realize it was probably 100 % curiosity but it worked.

Deer are very curious animals, yesterday I grunted at a small buck moving thru the brush and he came right in. Of course they aren’t rutting yet but I am sure he just wanted to see who was around! Never leave home without your grunt call.

Sounds like you had a good experience, thats why we all do it, theres no rush like an adrenalin rush!!

    There are no rules.
My bro in law snort wheezed his buck in middle of September-go figure.

Great info there, It is amazing how at times just the right thing at that moment just fires up the deer activity or response of a certain deer.

If you notice the Bluff Bucks advertisement on the left, that’s showing 2 different hunters and their bucks one is photographed in the woods and the hunter has white feathers on his arrows – Gary

The other hunter has orange and white vanes and the buck is photographed out in the open with the rack in the skyline – this awesome buck here on that particular night it was harvested was working it’s way into some apples trees – the hunter was trying to slow it up and was grunting and if I remember right maybe even tried a rattle bag but nothing was working and panic was setting in he scrambled quickly to grab his doe bleat can and gave it a quick flip last chance – and Bam! That buck turned and came at him so fast! he had to hustle to get ready for the shot do to the fact that one bleat from the can took a eve of panic to a scramble to get ready for the shot. What an exciting hunt for him that evening.

This goes to show you take the right buck at the right moment with the perfect effect that just fires him up and you’re in for a great time

    Good luck this year

    Jeff
