Last night my son shot a buck with a friend of mine( I have broke leg). When shot the deer flipped, and rolled down a little hill and started shaking. They thought it was a done deal so they were congratulating each other and when they looked back at the deer it was standing. When looking away while reloading the deer runs away! After an hour we take up the blood trail. It was sparse the first fifty and then it starts to get better and better. We found a spot where the deer stopped and it looked like it sprayed the ground. Ten feet away on a log was a pile of pink blood with alot of foam in it. thats were the blood quit. We found two more drops leading away. what are your thoughts, the deer was quartering away at 30 yards and my son said he aimed ten inches behind shoulder.

Get out there today and start fanning out, from the last known spot. I would guess it should be within 60 yards of where it sprayed…. Good luck

Once your search crew gets organized, work as a team with one person staying with the blood while others try to find more. Take your time and don’t get too far ahead with others walking on the blood. If you just run out of blood, as others mentioned above start circling the area and look for a dead deer.

Good luck and I hope you find him! Let us know…

Well my son, Ethan, gets to try it again. We looked for about 6 hours today with out moving the trail another foot! I wonder if he hit too far foward and caught the neck and wind pipe. The worst part of the deal is that the deer was a 140 class. But I think the deer is still walking. Ethan can still hunt every season until January 10th.

If you didn’t find the deer you should come across it and get the horns for memories and maybe a learning experience for a young hunter tell him to keep his head up everyone was once young and had some unexpected thing happen out in the field. Good luck on the rest of your hunting season

if he caught the wind pipe the deer is dead….go out either tomorrow or the next day and watch for ravens or crows

we have not given up we took a dog out with us and he couldn’t pick up a scent. the area where we lost the blood is a pasture with dirt cow trails and multifloral rose bushes, briars, and alot of cows and calves. parts of the briar patches are 50 feet across and very hard to look through, and there are about 200 of these patches so we have been unsuccesfull. I think it is now time to let the crows and vultures do the hunting

Sorry to hear that you didn’t find him yet. Hopefully your son will get another chance. In the meantime, keep on looking.
