My brother and i had a debate/in depth convo about saturday night today. We are planning on hunting an alfalfa field mixed in w/ all sorts of other stuff for the horses. About 17 days ago the field was cut by the farmer and we had a lot of bucks on camera come in to feed on the fresh alfalfa.

So here’s my questions: since we haven’t had rain in about 3-4 weeks, is it a good idea to hunt this spot since growth has been limited and deer prefer to feed on alfalfa when its real small?

Secondly, im planning on watching this field friday night in preparation for saturday nights sit. If i dont see any deer come out to feed, should i just abandon this spot and hunt somewhere else until the farmer cuts it again?

    Your thoughts are greatly appreciated

If it was alfalfa he probaly will not cut again you usally only get 2 or 3 cuts and it is pretty late in the year for another cut.I don’t know if i would abandon the set just yet you may never know unless you try.

Id atleast sit and watch it and see if they come out about the same time they did before. If they do Id bet things aren’t going to change much, there isn’t too many reasons for them not to do things different unless there’s another food source that’s more tempting but who knows forsure.

The deer are defiantly going after the young re-growth I would scope it out and set up fairly quick if its alfalfa and some grasses the farmer is done for the year most folks take their last cut of alfalfa – 4 crop in August some will take one more in Sept and that’s it.

Good luck I hope you smoke one heading to the field – you may want to slide in the cover some to catch the wise ones staging up before stepping out at dusk

Excellent advice. Like Jeff said, those big boys and maybe all deer might be holding tight on the edge and staging until dark.

My brother has an alfalfa field and the deer are hitting it but only in the dark with these temps.

Once it cools down a bit more you should start to see them hitting it pretty hard.

Acorns are dropping by the tons by me if its gonna be hot I am gonna stay in by the acorns till its gets dark. They haven’t been hitting the fields till after dark so hopefully I can catch one before they go out.

    Good luck

bennyJ gives good advice Find out the travel route to the field, set up back on it, so you have shooting light/hours….I love a good interception
