This is going to be my second year hunting whitetail and I’m struggling with trying to age and size the deer. What are your thoughts on this one? I’m guessing to be around 3.5 years old and 140 to 150 class. How far off am I? BTW–I’m not hunting this deer this year, I’m just wondering.

I live in city limits so I have to get certified and I didn’t b/c I was planning on giving him another year. Long story short, my wife fell in love with another house and now we have a big, fat Edina realty sign on our lawn. It’s too late to get certified this year, so I probably won’t get another chance at him next year.

i agree that deer is definitely not 3.5. I would say 4.5 at the youngest SHOOTER!!

I think hes older too, the tine length and the way the rack looks makes me think that, it doesn’t look like a young rack. Its not hard to think he had one about the same size last year.

Agreed! Definately mid 150’s to low 160’s gross. Hard to judge the spread given the angle of the pic though.

Thanks for the input. I figured 3.5 years b/c of how much smaller he was just 2 months ago. I added a pic of him from 7/7/09 and he looked like that almost all summer.

In the summer they don’t eat as much because they don’t need it. When fall gets closer they eat more for winter and they put more weight on because testosterone levels start to rise, this makes them look smaller in summer.

    Branden,

I commend you for having the discipline and standards you have set for yourself being its only your second year of bow hunting. That’s not an easy thing to do. You are also smart and doing yourself a favor by asking other members here their input on size and age. I agree with everyone above – 4.5 year old in the mid 150’s. Definitely a good buck to
