We fish the same way early and late in the day as we do middle of the day. We generally will slide a bit deeper as the sun comes up and then we’ll move back shallow on the same structure late in the day. We can’t air any footage taken until the sun starts to come up to provide sufficient light to allow for a clean image…. so that’s why you don’t see any footage from what you’re calling the “magic hour.”

And until a few years ago I didn’t realize how late in the a.m. it gets light and early in the p.m. it gets dark under the ice. And when you throw in variables of ice thickness, snow cover, water clarity, cloud cover, etc. the “magic hour” could vary considerably from lake to lake.

OK, I understand and agree with both issues; light plays a very important factor; I see it and try to adjust to the changes all the time when I’m on the ice.
My biggest question is, are my presentations and locations typical of what the rest of you do?

I have to ditto what James said. The presentation doesn’t have as much to do with time of day as it does what the fish are looking for. I would pay more attention to what natural forage the lake provides than what might work during the “Magic Hour”. If the lake does not provide much in the way of red tails, fishing something more along the lines of what natural forage that is in the lake.

At the same time, remember that during this “magic hour”, walleyes are on the hunt. I like to jig a little more aggressively during these times, whereas during the more stoic periods, I will jig aggressively to get their attention, and once I can spot them on the MarCum LX5, I will usually present more subtle jigging techniques as to not scare them away.

Unfortunatley, your only best bet is to spend time on the ice… practice… keep a log… and find what those particular eyes LIKE.

    Good luck!

The difference between deer nuts and beer nuts? Beer nuts are $1.50 and deer nuts are under a buck.
