I plan to brush hog an area than rake the best i can than fertilize and plant seeds making sure they hit ground. I have several large deer in the area and woould like to see them more than just during the rut. Any pointers will help thanks
July 17, 2009 at 1:38 pm #53770If you can this is the steps I would take or as many as you can of the below steps. Just remember the more you put into it the more you will get out of it. Many people think food plots are easy, believe me making a plot out of an area that is not crop and in the middle of the woods is very tough work if you want to do it right.
1) Brush Hog it then rake it off.
2) Spray some round up or weed killer in the area, rake it again.
3)Loosen the top of the soil somehow.
4) Fertilize and Lime it then rake tha tinto the soil
5) Plant it by broadcasting the seed.
6] Roll the area, I often do this with a 4 wheeler using the tires to tamp the seed into the ground making good seed to soil contact.
7)If you can plant it right before a rain that is best, if not water it if possible. As far as Seed that is very dependent on soil conditions, PH levels , etc. but Antler King Honey Hole definitely has a good name for itself and I would not hesitate using it.

One thing before you “fertilize”. Make sure you check the PH, and do it right. Your sucess can hinge on it.
stickerpointPosts: 135July 20, 2009 at 11:46 pm #53911i have a question….
does it help after you broadcast the seed to drag a weighted 2×8 or a railroad tie accrost it? i seen someone doing it last year and i dont know what it was for.July 21, 2009 at 12:43 am #53916Yes, probably used as a drag. For smaller seeds we use a drag after prodcasting. We have about a 6 foot pipe with the biggest(thickest) log chain we could find bolted to each end, works great. Larger seed varieties we lightly disc them in.

July 21, 2009 at 12:44 pm #53935Sticker, what I do on small plots is I just tamp the seeds with the 4 wheeler or tractor tires.
stickerpointPosts: 135July 21, 2009 at 2:31 pm #53952thanks. any preference on which one?
i have both. or i just could get dad to do it on the tractor and i do it on the atv. it would go faster. im a good thinker.July 21, 2009 at 2:34 pm #53953I guess looking at your tractor, I might say the 4 wheeler as the tractor could push the seed to far down?? Basically you are looking to get a 1/4″ or less depth on most Fall seeds.
stickerpointPosts: 135July 21, 2009 at 2:36 pm #53954we also have a compact tractor. but its not that smaller. i guess ill go with the atv.
