These are from a trail cam I put in my backyard. I saw the deer last year and never thought he’d make it through the winter.

We are in the city limits. But, according to a local archery shop, I can hunt but I need to be certified (take a course). I have not done this yet, but I plan to. We’ve been here 3 years and every year there is at least one deer that is hobbling around after being hit by a car. So, if I do shoot one in my yard, it will be just for a mercy harvest. Exactly one year ago, we saw this very deer in our backyard fall down three times after we accidentally spooked him by going out back to light fireworks. Even though I am a hunter, I hate to see animals suffer.

Deer like alot of other animals adapt to thier new conditions and thier injury seldom bothers them, they take it in stride. We have an old tom cat that lost its paw from fighting a few years back and hes adapted well with no problems. We thought about putting him down because we thought he’d need his paw for self defense and the vet said he’d do just fine and he has. Three legged animals are fairly common in the world of nature and they make it through with very few problems and live normal lives just like the others. Once they learn to compensate for thier injury they don’t have many problems and he looks like hes in good health and he seems to be ok.

    Branden-
That buck grew a bigger rack. I thought he’d go down hill more yet. For those that don’t know, Branden and I used to live about a mile apart in town. I had the same buck at my place many times and thought he’d die off for sure as bad as he was hobbling around last fall going into winter.
    Nice pics.
