Steve- I’m just getting caught up on this information. I have to say this is awesome!! I grew up with hunters that had always shot the first deer they saw, and now we’ve converted to QDM. You should see the difference in bucks over the last ten years from our farm. Sure the first few years kinda sucked as our havest levels were lower, but the payoff was definetly worth the wait. Think if this goes well they would expand around the state??? The next best deer hunting area in the state(besides SE MN is west central MN..Otter Tail, Morrison, Todd,Douglas, and Becker counties. I’d love to see it added there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When is the decision going to be made?

I would say moving it back a week or two would be a good idea.

I am still wondering why we need 4 firearms seasons. Can anyone fill me in on this? I get the youth hunt, muzzle loader is debatable, given you can use them during the normal firearms season and technology advancements, but a “buck season” and a “doe”. What is the reasoning behind this?

    Hey Guys,
It’s about time that the DNR do something. I mean they should do something to protect the young bucks. I took one
week off in Early November last year and past on 7 differant small bucks the biggest was alittle 6 point. The biggest buck I did see was about 3 year old 9 point. I don’t think that they would neccessarily have to go with antler point restrictions all they would have too do is look at North Dakota. In North Dakota you have to apply for a buck license and if you don’t get it I think you have shoot bonus does. I’ve talked to numerous people and they say see far more mature bucks than in Minnesota.
I do like the Idea but why always the SE why not on a
state wide level. And for some of you guys that say QDM does’nt work just look at the Hillview area and see some of
    the bucks they get.

There is no longer a “buck season” and a “doe” season. There is a 300A Season and a 300B Season, either season you can take a buck or a doe depending on what area you are in within the 300 zone.

Why do BOW hunters have a 100 days to hunt?

Exactly, that is why they were in quotations, so what is the reasoning behind the 2 seasons?

I hunt with a bow and with a firearm. Bow season is for the mainly for the hunt. Firearms season is more for spending time with friends and family bsing. More time to bow hunt is due to the tactics I would assume.

I am not in favor of antler restriction. I would like to see party hunting go away, and would be in favor of shorting the 2 seasons to 1 which takes place later in November. I would think the pressure from all seasons affect the deer herd more than the number of points. The timing and length of seasons have to play a major role in the health of the herd as well.

I think this is in part a money game more than conservation driven ideals!

I still have not found a reason for the 2 zone 3 seasons regardless of what they are called. Is this a just because it has always been? Zone 4 had 2 seasons at one time as well but is no more. Are the politics that strong in zone 3?

so what is the reasoning behind the 2 seasons?

I believe that there are two main reasons for the two seasons.

Number one is that allot of land owners (farmers) hunt the second season, most of those land owners do let the first season hunters hunt there land, if it was all one season allot of the first season hunters would lose land to hunt on.

Number Two IMO is that Zone three is the smallest zone in the state with more hunters hunting per square mile than the other two zones so it is also a safety issue so you do not have too many guys in the woods at one time.
