This year it is definitly tougher getting around up there but if I cant be 100 feet or more away from someone else and be on the spot I want to be on I just head some where else. There is a million places to fish so there is no need to be right on top of someone else.In deeper water I dont think the noise from trucks and vehicles makes a lot of difference compared to shallow water at least this is what my camera tells me.However one thing that does irritate me in the summer and winter is when people drive right by your door when it is possible to go around.

Although I feel your pain as this has happened to me several times ice fishing and many more while duck hunting, I have to ask this question. What structure were you on? It was already said that Mille Lacs is a very structure oriented lake so if you were on a piece of structure that would show up on a GPS you have got to expect this. If in fact you found a piece of structure that is not possibly on a mapper you may have a ligitimate complaint here. There is definately a “code” among sportsmen that is slowly being erased. That being – STAY THE HECK AWAY FROM THE OTHER GUY! Anyone here can harken back to a day when there was plenty of land/water for everyone, but that simply does not exist any more. You can buy a lake chip for every lake in god-knows-where and have as much or more knowledge of the structure as some one who has fished there for 20 years without one. People are not afraid to go to “unknown” or big lakes and fish them any more because a GPS will always get them back. That is the age we live in and we all better learn how to deal with it. If you don’t like it, change it. Change the mentality of the people who will carry this sport in the future. Spend time with your kids or some one elses, teaching them what you have been taught or figured out on your own, respect the other guys space. Too many times I have seen people come right up on me, set up and out pops a 5 or 6 year old kid tagging along with dad for the day. Now he has learned that is the way you do it. Don’t just complain to complain, thatS irritating. Do something about it. One of the first replies to this post was something about making a code amongst people on IDA, not a bad idea. It has to start somewhere, why not here? Then maybe we can avoid this in the future.

– No person may erect a dark house, fish house or shelter within 10 feet of an existing
dark house, fish house or shelter. Now, a fisher with scruples knows this does not give you the right to set up on top of someone else. I have asked permission to drill near another guy in certain situations, but usually try to find my own way. At times, with 20 or more portables showing up in a hot spot, things get real cozy very quickly. If you anticipate a crowd, at least be there prior to sundown instead of drilling all around the shacks while the fish are on the bite.
I’m preaching to the choir here, but the person who sets up late, close, and noisily has the “Right” but not the ethics of a true sportsman. I usually make sure they hear that message clearly.January 4, 2008 at 8:27 pm #639680I would have to agree with B. Peterson. [censored] happens. I always do my best to give space to others and try to stay away from others for myself as well. However, it is what it is. There will always be jerks, so just drink a beer and enjoy your time fishing – winter, summer,
January 4, 2008 at 8:39 pm #639683You said it Wabasha.
It would be great if everyone had more respect for each other….sadly enough it isn’t just fishing and hunting you can see it on the roadways, in the workplace and pretty much any environment you can think of. For some reason the idea of respecting each other seems to be fading away…..which is really sad.Unfortunately the people that are the most disrespectful really don’t think they are doing anything wrong so even if you try to enlighten them all they will do is bash you for not respecting them and their “right” to hunt or fish wherever they want.
JBJanuary 4, 2008 at 9:14 pm #639686You are all a bunch of cry babies. I’ll fish whereever I want on that lake. You don’t own it!!
Easy boys, just funnin’ with ya. I always take it as a chance to meet new people. Some days it doesn’t bother me, others it does.
January 4, 2008 at 9:22 pm #639689Funny part is that it’s just a little rock pile we’re on – no more than 15 feet across. We were just biding out time ’til the ice was good enough to get to where we wanted to go. There were two houses there and the guys weren’t even on the “spot” if that’s what they truly wanted to fish. Good stuff.
The only reason we went where we were was to be away from everybody – then that happens. Oh well … we’re moved now and out where we want to be. Happy huntin’, boys (and gals)!
January 4, 2008 at 9:44 pm #639695Watch it Kooty!!! I’ll kick your .

January 4, 2008 at 9:47 pm #639697I think Bowman and I are going to try and take the kids out on Sunday if the weather holds. I’m pretty much limited to within an hour of home right now.
January 4, 2008 at 10:09 pm #639700I hear you…with the current “situation”.
Don’t get to close to anyone though.
January 4, 2008 at 10:15 pm #639704I am sorry if this takes away some of your thunder.
I was comming off the lake on Hunters road or path a few weeks back, a staked trail going to the jug.
I was on my snowmobile it was half hour after dark. These guys set up near trail and scream as I go buy, I wanted to turn around and have a little go around about common sense.
But thought if your set up on the road you dont have any common sense. And all the college in the world cant teach it either.
probably one of those kids raised with time outs or some thing like that.I guess thats what seperates the men from the boys.
January 5, 2008 at 4:28 am #639767I drove by those same guys I think!!! not more than 75 feet off the end of the road…….
ahaas77Posts: 29March 18, 2009 at 2:10 am #200234Well I’m working on the story. It’s a hard to believe one but let me just say this about this deer, it was a gift!
It scores 192 3/8 gross and 177 5/8 NT and has 17 scorable points. I hope that you can read the story when I finish it, because this was more then just a Monster buck for me. It is so much more then that!
jeff_hansenPosts: 475March 18, 2009 at 12:21 pm #48765Wow! Very nice deer. My biggest buck probly wont score half of that haha. Are you gunna try mounting that one along with your others?
ahaas77Posts: 29March 18, 2009 at 12:26 pm #48766Yes Im going to do a full body mount on him. In the same pose as Brads “the wide one” mount. I do mount most of the animals that I harvest. I guess that’s why Im divorced. LOL
DugMerPosts: 241March 18, 2009 at 12:38 pm #48769Great pictures. Thanks for sharing and can’t wait to read the story.
March 18, 2009 at 1:21 pm #48780Brad and I had the priveledge to see this buck in person @ SW Event a few weeks back and meet b4hawk. It is truly a great story. Congrats again on a buck of a lifetime!
March 18, 2009 at 1:48 pm #48783Did you scare the thing to death? LOL—I just couldn’t see a bullet/arrow hole anywhere.
March 19, 2009 at 1:59 am #48798OMG Dan that is one Awesome Monster Buck!!!
Congrats on a true buck of a life time!
March 19, 2009 at 8:00 pm #48822Thanks Dan for signing on with us and posting a picture of your once in a lifetime buck! Like Lip mentioned above, I got to personally hold this rack and it’s more unbelievable in person!
However, what truly makes this buck so special is not the number of points that it has or the gross score. What makes is so special is what it means to Dan and he will be able to share that with us once he releases his story.
