Yes, I do use deer decoys during the year. In the right situation they are SAWEET. The wrong situation they can ruin a sit/hunt.

It is a LOVE / HATE thing. Do any of you guys use them in the Early Season (before rut)???

I had very good luck using a buck decoy last year right before prerut – late Oct. (it brought in 3 different bucks but no shooters) . I’ve never tried using them during early season. Has anyone tried using a buck decoy in conjunction with a bedded doe decoy?

I used to have one a few years and they do work but are sometimes limited in what they do. I’ve had young deer walk right up and look it in the eyes. Older deer seem to hold back aways most of the time but they do help on the right days. Thier good for calming down another deer if they’ve heard something then see the decoy.

I try to frequently use a buck or doe decoy in the prerut. Ive had good success w/ pulling in younger bucks but no shooters but its bound to happen one of these times

That reminds me, mine is burried in snow underneath a pinetree just down from one of my stands. I carried mine out last year and began setting it up and had to abort because here came a 3pt. I never ended it up using it last year. I have had only good responses from deer but only young bucks. Although the evenings I didn’t see anything it could have been from deer shying away from the decoy and I never saw them. This the last 2 weeks of October.

My single most favorite thing to see in the deer woods is a buck “POSTURE” against another buck. The stiff legged walk, the I’m looking this way but walking diagonal that way, the constant licking of the “lips”, The I’m puffed out like a Gobbler look. It just does not get any better then that IMO.

The best way to see this behavior is through Decoying. Those of you that have seen it on TV or Live know what I’m talking about!

I believe when used at the correct time, you could stand around with a flashing neon sign and a buck wouldn’t see you. I’ve had great luck, and bad luck though. Mature bucks AND does, will study the decoy-movement of some sort will usually put them at ease, however lack of movement will spoke them for sure. I’ve switched from a Carry-Lite to a Montana, since the slightest breeze will give it a little “life”. It also acts as a great scent wick, not to mention far easier to carry and much quieter. I’ve had a mature buck come in to sniff the crotch of both types of decoys, and slightly and not so slightl spoke when they made contact. Bottom line for me-I wouldn’t be without one.

    GUT

That is exactly what I’m talking about.

I would have loved to seen the video of that brutal attack.
