When is a good time to start looking for sheds? I am hoping to get out a couple of times this winter for them, but with all of the snow, is it worth it? Just wondering if I am better off waiting for the spring?

Darin, I think the best answer to your question is “IT DEPENDS”.
I have trail camera pics of two different bigger bucks that have dropped one horn. But there are things to consider. If you go shed hunting, will you blow the deer out of the area??? That is never a good thing. Does your area receive any other shed hunting pressure???? Overall I think right now is a tad early, but it depends on your spot. If it is a feeding or transition areas, those are great mid day spots to look. Deer are not around and depending on wind you keep your scent away from the deer. The bedding areas I tend to hold off on for a lil while if there is no other pressure, as you blow them big boys out of there now and they are probably gone for awhile. So I’ll wait until more mid to end of February or later for those spots.
Anytime in the woods is a good time, but make sure just like hunting you are not kicking the deer around before they have dropped. If I go out now, I tend to look in transition and feeding areas for at least another month. Now is a great and easy time to see there late season travel routes and bedding areas. Take notes when you get home and file them away in a folder. It is amazing what we can forget in a year or half year. Sometimes I will even take a GPS and mark possible tree stand locations as things look way different when everything is all green come next Summer.
Thanks Lip. No one else is on the property so, I will just look in the feeding areas for now. I will post any if I find them.

Darin…I went out this weekend and about had a heart attack…the snow was so deep and even with snow shoes on it was tough..needless to say I didnt find any sheds…typically I think this is pretty early but i was bored and have seen deer that dropped or had just 1 antler on. Other wise I am no expert but agree with Lip…I have only found a few and it has been later in the year when the snow is almost gone..good luck..Jay
Was on Milac’s with Bob Carlson fishing. Where did you shed hunt?
Someone was in back of my buddy Dean’s property in the park. Some foot prints.
Lip had some good points, but you also have to worry about the tree rats and other rodents. They can chew up a shed in no time.
It’s been slow with all the snow this year. I have only found 1 and it was back on Dec. 27.
Lip,
Gotta get the dogs trained to retrive these Deer Sheds. I’ll be working with my Lab on it.

Wouldn’t just be easier to train Lip?
Something I never did with Rufus, but plan on doing with the next Pup! I just hope he never gets a hold of a mount off the wall.
Brad, just ask Stacdie HOW easy I am NOT to train.

Who is Stacdie?
No wonder why she can’t train him!
Maybe we should call him Lisp Whimper.
I guess I have to start one finger pecking/typing like ol’ man Tuckner, I guess.
