A good friend of mine got these on his camera a while back. What are your thoughts on these dogs? Coyote or wolf? These pics were taken roughly 5 miles from where my original post trailcam pics were taken. I’m very concerned if the wolf population is booming! Thanks, Randy.

Again, my gut says coyote, but I have no wolf experience.

There’s no doubt in my mind that these are coyotes Coppertop – although I have been wrong before… Let’s hope that they are “yotes” for the deer’s sake!

I ran these by an Iowa trapper and his first impression was wolves. So was mine. The more I look at them the more I think they are definitely wolves. The only one that resembles a yote in any way is the back one in the double shot but I think that is due to angle of pic. WOLVES!

Yeah I know everybody has seen enough but I’m just concerned IF they’re wolves. I’m hoping they’re yotes but I’ve seen plenty of yotes and the sheer size of these has thrown me!

I too enjoy seeing the pictures. Maybe a guy could place an object such as a 5 gallon pail in the front of the camera so there is something to compare the animal size to.

my guess is this years wolf pups. Not mature enough to be much bigger then a yote

I say they are ‘yotes. But to be sure, let’s get that Iowa trapper up to catch a few or all of them.

The legs are pretty long, leaves me to believe they are wolves. Sorry to bear bad news. If you compare a coyote to a wolf, one of the most obvious differences is the length of the legs.

Yup…this time I agree with young Wolves… Short thick snout, big neck/chest area and long legs…black hair along the back…

Guys…the face, legs, tail…all say coyote. Same thing with what people call “Brush wolves”. A Brush wolf is a coyote where I come from. Same thing as how we call a sauger a sandpike. You really got to get out and see a wolf in the wild to appreciate the size and build of these animals. A wolf is time and a half bigger that the biggest German Shepard! Now take a look at these yotes again. I used to hunt in Fairbanks MN up by Virginia/Ely. Trust me, when You see a wolf you go “Whoa!” They are MUCH bigger in person than you think they are. Their builds are much thicker and longer than a coyote. I have no doubt that there are coyotes out there that would knock your socks off with their size! But even those don’t come close to a true wolf. I hope to have some pics of some world class coyotes I have been seeing by my house. Hopefully I will catch up with some for pics.

I sent the links of both your posts to a buddy in Ely who works for the fisheries dept. Here is his reply…..

Kevin, my OPINION……i believe they are all very well furred coyotes. in that first set of pics the coyote only comes up to roughly the belly of the deer & it doesn’t seem to be a really large deer. a wolf would be much larger. also the foot of the coyote on the one photo is not real large….wolves have much larger feet & especially noticeable in winter with the extra hair.
the photos where the eyes are illuminated look just like a photo i have of a coyote at night & if i knew how to email photos i would. again these critters are well furred & in good condition but i believe them to be coyotes.
you deer hunters are slacking off in this neck of the woods……went back up to Lk of the Woods last sat a.m……got north of Orr & this crazed deer came out of nowhere & dove right into the front of the blue S-10. much damage & the truck is now in Duluth to get fixed. caught a bunch of sauger but a little luster of that trip was dulled by the deductable i’m gonna have to pay….coulda bought one helluva color depth finder or plane tickets for us to alaska with that $. which is why i’m a fan of the wolf……EAT THOSE DAMN DEER BEFORE THEY CRASH INTO ME !!!
the wildlife guys are all gone today but i’ll show them the photos & if they have a different opinion i’ll let you know.

The Iowa trapper I spoke of is a friend. Due to his location he is not an expert on wolves BUT he has trapped and shot coyotes his entire life. As a matter of fact he threw a road kill yote in his truck this morning just to skin tonight. He says they are NOT coyotes. I consider him an expert on coyotes and believe him 100%. Put that in your pipe and smoke it Kooty.

Seriously, you lose all credibility in most subjects when you introduce any Iowan as a subject matter expert. Except for corn, of course. They know what they are doing in that area. It’s like asking a Packer fan who is the best player ever to step on the football field.

I’ve seen 4 timberwolves in the woods in the past. They were much bigger and stockier that these pictures. My vote goes to Coyotes.

Even though the pictures don’t resemble this coyote picture.
