I’ve been chasing coues whitetail my whole life. I finally had a chance to hunt the “Eastern” whitetail. I got one on November 29, 2008. I got in my stand at 2:30 pm and at just a few minutes later I heard the leaves rustling behind me so I got ready. I was just sitting there and before I knew it this buck was sitting right below my tree stand. He looked right at me and we looked eye to eye. Then he looked left and then I stood up and got ready to draw. Then he took a couple more steps and that’s when I drew my bow back. He was 18 yards so I put my 20 pin low and hit him right in the rib cage. The arrow got him right in the heart. He only went about 100 yards.

I called my wife, and she brought out the boys so that my whole family was able to help me track him and find him. We were looking for about 5 minutes and my wife finally found the blood trail. It was good to see how my boys reacted…I was very impressed as a father to see my boys so interested in the whole experience.

These corn fed deer taste a lot better than those cactus eating deer from AZ.

Sorry for the confusion. Back in Arizona, we call these deer Eastern whitetails. But, yes, this deer was shot in Minnesota.

This was completely different hunting for me. I am used to spot and stalk and glassing. I didn’t know about just sitting in a tree stand waiting for an animal to come by. But I’m hooked. It was one of the most fun hunts I’ve ever had!
